It is but they are cracking down. You might do this once but the second time you risk immediate deportation and blacklist

 they will likely extend consideration to ASEAN passport holders. This is for the nationals who are abusing visa waivers to maintain residency. All of them can simply apply for DTV, O, LTR or privilege.

Are those flawless? No. They can definitely use some streamlining but they add better control than a tired IO at 2 AM

 1. IO opens passport

2. Sees no valid visa

3. Sees 2 entry stamps

4. Rejects. (Probably with a large, hard to miss full page stamp)

For purposes of having 800k in a Thai bank that is sufficient. How it got into the account doesn’t matter for the 800k method. It only matters for the 65k/month method

 if you pay taxes you can reclaim a limited a,out of vat paid during th year to offset any tax paid.

And sure you don’t need it to open an account but it’s a lot easier
