What should I do if I received a strange visa expiration date for my NON-OA visa extension in Thailand?

Soooo

I’m doing my 1 year extension on my O A this week (it expires in December).

I returned from a short overseas trip yesterday and for some reason the IO gave me a visa expiration date of 29 November 2025!

I’ll still do my normal extension anyway but thought this was weird.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is confused about receiving a visa expiration date of 29 November 2025 instead of the expected date. Various comments discuss the process of extending a visa, including the importance of health insurance and how the Non-OA visa can be renewed or extended through border runs or by meeting specific requirements. The user also shared frustrations about documentation issues when attempting to extend their visa.

I have a non-OA visa.

I didn’t think that it could be “extended”.

My understanding is that, when the 1 year validity is getting close, a new health insurance policy needs to be bought, you leave Thailand; and you re-enter Thailand, just before the expiry date of the Visa.

You will then be stamped in, until the expiry of the new insurance policy.

Well that was fun (not). Dragged myself to WC at 0830. Had every piece of paper imaginable.

Rejected.

I didn’t have the ID of the owner of the condo we are in. Which is DEFINITELY not on the paperwork list.

And getting it from an owner who hasn’t read a message in 3 months? Fun

You need a new insurance and you can border bounce (no 800k needed) to get a new 12 month entry stamp or you can get the extension if you meet the requirements 800k etc. Whether you get an extension or border bounce just before the Non-OA expires the new 12 month stamp is not mutli-entry so a re-entry permit is required. If you border bounce then you can extend at the end of the second year.

what I was really questioning was , whether a non-OA Visa could actually be extended at all.

My understanding is that you could get stamped in for another year ish, if you had a new health insurance policy.

Yes, as I mentioned it can be extended before the initial Non-OA expires or, if on a new 12 month entry stamp, before this 12 months is up. Insurance will always be required as all extensions are based on the requirements for the original Non-OA.

I arrived with an OA in February 2017. I took a trip to Cambodia in November 2017. Like you, not understanding the visa, I went to extend in February 2018. Immigration told me to come back in November 2018. From then on I extended every November.

When they implemented the insurance requirement in 2019 I always synced my insurance dates with my November extension date.

so that would be done at the multi entry counter at the airport before Thai immigration?

@Steve ******
The 1 year permission to stay stamp comes from the Immigration officer when returned through the airport. 1 year extensions were done at Bangkok Immigration.

@Steve ******
Nope, that's for re entry permits, extentions are done at your local Immigration Office.

On a Non OA you will stamped in for 365 days on each entry or up until your insurance is valid until. If you enter just before the visa expires and have the relevant insurance you’ll still get the full year. This “second” year is not multiple entry. If you want to keep the stamp “alive” you’d need to get a re-entry permit (single or multiple).

@Stuart ********
i thought insurance is not a requirement for NON OA?

Insurance is a requirement for a Non OA entry.

that's the Non-O with no insurance requirement

so my O A which was multi entry is effectively still functional BUT every time I leave the country and return I’m on a new visa extension.

Just curious since I’m doing the extension tomorrow anyway
Graham ******
@Steve ******
Don't do your extension (1900B) plus a multi-entry re-entry permit (3800B) tomorrow, just get a multi-entry re-entry permit to put you in exactly the same position for 1900B less and virtually no documentation requirements.

@Steve ******
no. Every time you leave the country you need a re-entry permit to keep that existing stamp alive. If you leave and re-enter frequently you can get a multiple re-entry permit, roughly 3 times the cost of a single re-entry permit
Graham ******
@Steve ******
You enter on a new one year entry stamp (if you have insurance) not an extension. Once the Non-OA has expired you will need a re-entry permit to keep your latest entry stamp live or it cancels. You do not need the extension yet.
