If you're in Chiang Mai, I'd suggest a visa run to Laos with a company. I hear the embassys at Savannakhet and Vientiane are easy to get visas and easy to renter Thailand when you have a history.

Samui immigration changed over the extended VE stamp to my new passport and did a land border crossing

it's not a tourist visa, it's a 45 day visa exemption that's been extended by 30 days.
