no you don't have to fly. When you depart Langkawi the ferry company keeps your passport and hands them to immigration when you land on Lipe. You then get called up and stamped in. Sometimes the office will allow the 30 day extensions other times you just go to Satun.

check out Canadians in Thailand | Canadiens en Thaïlande there is some info there... also the typical idiots but that's Facebook. We did this but without the dog. Feel free to pm me and I'll be happy to answer anything I can.

remember to check the date to make sure you get the correct end date before you leave the counter 🙂.

Enter visa exempt, get 30 day stamp. You can extend this once for an additional 30 days at your nearest immigration office. Or apply for a single entry tourist visa prior to departing your home country, get stamped in for 60 days. You can extend this once for an additional 30 days at your nearest immigration office.

You can also enter visa exempt, get the 30 days and extension, then go to a neighboring country then re-enter Thailand visa exempt or apply for a tourist visa at the Thai embassy in that country.

I've been coming here since 2000, get asked almost every time, flying from Canada or the US. I must either look really sketchy or I'm just that lucky.

based on some of your responses, assume you are CAD? You can still get the affidavit of income from the CAD Embassy in Thailand so you aren't required to do the 800,000THB in the bank. There were rumors flying around that it might change but who knows.

if you apply in Canada, you need insurance for the 90 days of the visa. Once you do the extension, you don't. And as people have said, you can come in on a tourist or visa exempt and apply once here without the insurance requirement.

Korean Air might ask, it can often be random. We got asked once with a tourist visa and just explained we would renew it and then weren't sure where we were headed next and it was okay. Then our next one, we didn't get asked. If using tourist visa(e-visa) they would want it at the 60 day mark. I'd consider looking at onwardticket or just be prepared to book something on the spot that you can cancel for a full refund.

If you decide on visa exempt, all the airlines flying from Canada will ask for proof of onward travel at the 30 day mark. We've flown from YYC, YVR, YWG and have been asked by Air Canada and any of the Star Alliance member airlines.

Check out rates.ca to get quotes from loads of CAD companies. I've had Allianz thru TravelCuts and MSH Canuck Voyager. Both were reasonable and provided excellent service.
