Depending on your age there is a cheap insurance you can get which is pretty close to useless but it ticks the OA box. You can get it for 7700 baht, which is still cheaper than leaving/coming back which still requires a more expensive insurance and all the associated carry-on. Unless you're planning on a trip away just buy this one

Each time you enter you get stamped in for 60 days and can extend for a further 30 days at immigration office. You then leave and re-enter, and the repeat the process. If you do a second leave/re-enter just before the visa expires, you can get a third bite at the cherry and get another 60+30 days

What do you call "tourist areas"? Bars already open in Sukhumvit Bangkok and Bangla Phuket. I understand also in Samui but can't vouch for that. Where are you planning to go?

Randy Goossen. Ok, rather than stuff around with an STV just apply for an OA visa from your embassy. This gives you one year stamp when you enter, and the potential of a second year if you are able to do a border bounce in a year's time (which is highly likely). You don't need any pre-booked accommodation and you don't have to worry about in-country extensions.
