What are the visa-on-arrival rules for Romanians traveling to Thailand, and what happens if one overstays?

Hi guys, one of my friends is coming to Thailand with some questions and info I hadn't heard about.

He is coming from Romania by plane in about a week. He says he will get a visa-on-arrival for 15 days? (I thought it was 45 or 30 days but they keep changing it, it seems.) And he also said the visa-on-arrival is non-extendable. Is that right?

He plans on staying in Thailand for around 40 days, and he is wondering what would happen if he overstayed his visa-on-arrival. Besides the fine when leaving the country, would he still be able to fly around from city to city, or would he get stopped? He is thinking of eating the fine, no sweat, and traveling as per usual.

What do you think? Thanks for the help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Romanian citizen can obtain a visa-on-arrival for 15 days when entering Thailand, which is non-extendable. Overstaying this visa can lead to fines of 500 THB per day, with a maximum fine of 20,000 THB. Overstaying may also result in being blacklisted, impacting future travel to Thailand. It is advisable for the traveler to apply for a single entry tourist visa before arrival for a longer stay of 60 days instead.

You say he's flying to Thailand in a couple of days. Has he applied for the Thailand Pass and been given the OK. If he hasn't got the Thailand Pass QR code he won't be flying to Thailand

Yes, he has an onward ticket to Cambodia within 15 days that he used to get the Thailand pass. I'm not sure if he was planning on actually using the ticket or just cancelling it, but it's looking more likely that he will use it now 😂

Depending on how many days you overstay, you can be blacklisted from Thailand. Since he would overstay 25 days, he wouldn't be officially blacklisted, but I believe his overstay would appear in the system every time he would try to enter the country by air—which would drastically reduce his chances of being let into the country. Basically, making him blacklisted.

Follow up question, if he were to leave after 15 days and go to Cambodia, how soon would he be able to return to Thailand and get another visa-on-arrival?

He departs from Romania in a few days and has called his embassy already; they have said they won't be able to get him a TR visa in time, so he will be coming in with visa-on-arrival

Can a VOA get on COVID extensions?
@Benjamin *****
Better than him being stranded in Cambodia, if the country closes due to Omicron or something.

can he? I see absolutely no harm in applying. The absolute worst that would happen is they would give him a 7 day extension of stay denied stamp, giving him 7 days to leave Thailand (won’t affect future entries)

This guy says he entered with a VOA and that he's been getting COVID extensions from MTT (although he could be be confusing terms):

Maybe possible to get COVID extensions. Like you said, if it isn't possible, he just leaves like he was planning to do anyway (and maybe even gets 7 days). Worth a try. And worth not getting stuck in Cambodia due to Omicron. 😄

Got it, that's good news. Apparently he already has a flight to Cambodia which he used to get his Thailand pass already, so maybe popping out and then back is the best way to do things legally

I highly recommend posting this question on a Cambodia visa advice group in case there are restrictions or new entry requirements

He can return immediately, there is no set time limit he needs to leave Thailand. Once he is stamped into Cambodia he can turn around and come back

in theory he can fly out to Cambodia and return the same day BASED ON THAI RULES. There may be restrictions for Cambodia that we, Thai Visa Advice, are not aware about.

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses. That is way stricter than I thought it was! I'll let him know; I'm not sure he'll have time to get a visa appointment at his local embassy, but at the very least, maybe he can get an onward ticket

Thanks! He mentioned that his local embassy is fully booked until he leaves, but I'll direct this to him and see if he can figure anything out

Romania has a 15 day visa on arrival for 2,000 THB. This visa on arrival can NOT be extended, and a new visa CAN NOT be purchased inside Thailand.

OVERSTAYING is a crime. The fine for overstaying is 500 THB a day with a maximum fine of 20K THB. If he is caught while on overstay, he will be blacklisted. See

For the punishments.

He should enter on a single entry tourist visa

How long does he intend being on overstay? If he's discovered anywhere whilst travelling it's arrest and IDC, not a pleasant experience as I understand

I think that contemplating overstaying is a pretty piss poor idea 😮 So lets leave that off the discussion.

You are confusing a couple totally different things

-people from 51 countries who can show up here and get stamped in on a visa exempt entry for free for 30 days

Whereas;

-people from 18 countries that show up here and BUY a visa on arrival for 2000baht at the airport when they stamp in and get 15 days on it.

A visa exempt entry can be extended by 30 days for 1900baht

BUT

a Visa On Arrival (like your Romanian friend will buy when he gets here) can only be extended for 7 days and that's under the "extension application denied" 7 days to get out of thailand stamp. 😮

I'd say for the length of time he wants to stay here he needs to BUY a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate BEFORE he wings his way here and that way he will get stamped in for 60 days when he arrives.

To be completely honest, I don't think they will even approve his Thai Pass OR let him stamp in without proof he's leaving in the time he's gonna get stamped in for on the Visa On Arrival (15 days)
