you can always try online and if rejected go in person. The part on the immigration website of having to do the first report in person has been removed. My only experience has been in Bangkok

like everyone I got my DTV out of the country and after 90 days did online and was approved. I extended in the country and my 90 days was done online.

You only need to go back in person if you get a new passport.

For the last two years I've only done my 90 day reporting online, changed from Elite in July to the DTV, Oct and Jan I did my 90 day reporting online and was approved. I will be doing my next 90 days in a couple of weeks online.
