Same happened to me in Las Vegas on KAL. Asked for my work permit and I informed them they were not required outside Thailand. They let me on.

Do you need a letter from the embassy to get a 60-day extension in Thailand?

The US embassy responded that Thai immigration no longer requires a letter, and on the form there is a space for Embassy Cannot Provide Letter. I printed that response and presented it to IB and got under consid til 9 Dec then extension until Jan 30.
