TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion reveals a myriad of reasons why individuals choose Thailand for living, working, or traveling, including the pleasant climate, affordable cost of living, rich culture, excellent food, and overall lifestyle opportunities. Many expats have personal stories tied to their decisions, such as falling in love, seeking adventure, or finding an appealing work environment. However, the conversation also touches on the complexities of navigating bureaucracy, cultural challenges, and changing sentiments among locals, highlighting a mix of positive and negative experiences.

Hi guys, I’m her teammate and I want to ask you something too.

My post still doesn’t get approved, so I decide to comment a question instead.

Here’s a question : What do you think about Thailand’s Visa inquiry?

Thank you for helping me, I’m really grateful.

I have holidayed in Thailand for twelve years, the last five years have been for nine months of the year

The people are so friendly and welcoming.

The last few years I have seen the smiles diminishing as the strong Baht has kept thousands of tourists from making the journey.

Also the country has been run by the military, this was put in place by their late king whom the people worshiped.

The appointed new king, who took over when his father died in 2016, spends so much time out of the country, the people are naturally annoyed at him trying to rule Thailand whilst living in Germany, this has added fuel to the present unrest in Bangkok.

My Thai partner who lives in Thailand has told me that suicides are at an all time high, mainly males who are unable to find any work to support their families

Tourism is the main industry in Thailand

Tourism creates so many jobs for these poor people who rely on the industry

Until the King accepts his responsibility for the running of the country I'm afraid Thailands tourism will be carry on going down.

When I first went there 12 years ago the Baht was 68 for £1, now you're lucky if it reaches 40 to £1

The corrupt police force is another factor in the downturn of tourism

Personally I adore Thailand, but even a blind man on a galloping horse can see the days are numbered for Thailand to get anywhere near to thriving country I experienced just over a decade ago

I still hope to get out there in the very near future, but I'm also glad to know I have my home in the UK, just in case

the King maybe the only person who could legitimately solve this current deadlock impasse; the majority would respect his decision; Whatever that may be.

I came here first on the QE2 in 1985 working ship went to pattaya and i hated it and vowed never to come back.

3 years later my friends brother dissapeared from contact only a vague letter he was on an island off Phuket.

Eventually found him on Koh Yao Noi and fell in love with Phang Nga bay. Love the quirks of Thailand
Pete ********
Ive lived in northern Thailand since 2014. Originally came here as an intern for an English Digital Marketing company and stayed after the 4 months was up because:

* I fell in love (and still am)

* I bought a condo which was great value

* I felt a freedom like I had back in Australia in the 70s

* I needed to learn to relax and stay calm and stop focussing on work

* I wanted my money to go further and not get eaten up in stupid taxes (like in Australia)

* I could take a day off and goof around and not feel guilty

* I wasn't constantly worried about money as the cost of living is low

* I wanted a simple life

Thailand is far from perfect. But I feel I've added another 20 years to my life by moving here.

Came on holiday, stayed. Refreshed at how although there are laws for everything like every country here most of it is ignored and folk just get on with life. Not a police state like so many places like USA and Australia with UK trying to catch up.

@Andrew *******
Someone once said to me that if they were gonna set up a Communist state, they would use Australia as an example

I came to Thailand because I wanted to leave my home country (USA), I wanted to explore the world a little and Thailand had the best prospect of support myself. I taught for a couple years then started working online. I like Thailand. I am always happy to return to Thailand, people here are great. So now I stay in Thailand and travel the region. Covid has restricted travel, but Thailand is still better than the US.

I looked at the list of insignificant developing third world countries scattered around the globe and picked this one.

Once you get past these peoples' aberrant behavior pawned off as 'culture', it's not too bad a place to be..

Believe me, there are far worse places.. :O :P

The Thais hate farang you will always be second class and if you are ever in dispute with a Thai don't bother you will never win.
แมทธิว **************
@Andrew ********
You do have a point many foreigners in Thailand never interact with people other than the bubble in which they live, you will meet all sorts in Thailand and yes people hate you the same as they hate a black person most of them are ok when they get to know you however some just still don’t like you. I don’t let it bother me you need thick skin to thrive in Thailand
Rich ********
If you embrace the culture, give people respect, learn to speak Thai, I feel like most of the issues you reference melt away. Thai people are wonderful in my experience.
Andrew *********
@Rich *******
They can be, having lived in Malaysia and Singapore find the people there easier to get on with and the standard if English is better and living standard higher.Whether you Speak Thai or not should no make a great difference how you are treated.
Rich *****
@Andrew ********
, you’ve obviously met my wife!
Andrew *********
@Rich ****
Thailand had a lot to offer but it seems to be getting more tedious and a lot of my friends especially find that little things that we would just shrug off can start to be irritating..maybe we are just grumpy old men now.
Andrew *********
Trolling...that standard cop out...or more line farang living in their own bubbles without actually really engaging with the local Thais.
Andrew *********
@Luc ***********
There are exceptions but generally the odds are stacked against foreigners.Most Thais think Covid19 will get worse because if foreigners. The Internet is littered with stories of families abusing the goodwill of foreigners, have Thai friends who are fed up with their families who see darang ad ATM's nothing more.
James ******
@Andrew ********
dirty fuckin farrang!

Agreed, if your not spending, no ducks given towards you unless in the country.

Country is lovely, the general population are nice but Government will fuck you dry if you’re not careful
Andrew *********
@James *****
Had to deal with local authorities, they do like bureaucracy fof bureaucracies sake, most of the processes do not serve any purpose ,just the way it has always been done.
James ******
@Andrew ********
agreed, and most of them have absolutely no idea what they’re doing anyway. Takes forever and a day to get shit done and that’s even with my wife sat there.

Police are clueless to traffic laws and most Government people couldn’t count to 5 if they were asked to.
Andrew *********
@James *****
Maybe it us getting older but there were some absolute fuckwits on the roads today even my wife was sure at the idiots out today.Mostly on motorbikes 3 to a motorbike no rear light and if course no helmets Police drove beside them and did nothing.
James ******
@Andrew ********
nothing out the ordinary then? 😂

I ride & drive and they’re as bad as each other.

Merely a pissing contest to see who can get to the next traffic lights faster and never look further than the car in front. Much the same as here in Middle East mate.... get them back on donkeys... oh sorry, most have the same mentality so that wouldn’t work either.

I’ve met quiet a few Thais in 15 yrs living there and to be honest, most are fine with me but the total brainless mentality when doing anything that needs grey matter.

That then brings us back to the authorities... keep them stupid keeps them under control I guess 😂
Andrew *********
@James *****
It never ceases to amaze me they seem to almost tempt fate and say..go on do your worst! If you get killed it was fate or bad luck nothing to do with ignoring basic road rules lost count of the number of times people stray into your lanes, gets worse the closer you get to Isaan country..they are in a league of their own, even my wife swears at them having lived in the UK.
James ******
@Andrew ********
I took my wife back to Scotland 2 yrs ago and she was astounded that I didn’t cuss once while driving the entire visit. Couldn’t believe how courteous drivers were and how “easy” it was to drive during rush hour.

Didn’t want to leave! 😂
Andrew *********
@James *****
Obviously not driving in London, I bet they will be a few f***s , on a more serious note even London drivers ard way more courteous than Thai ones.
Luc ************
Maybe they hate you as a farang but my family and friends love and respect me. And I had a lot of disputes but when I was right they acctepted. Comes from both sides so stop generalizing.

Totally agree! Never needing room heating or a hot water system is amazing too. Water, electricity and internet are all extremely reliable. I have confidence that, when the time comes, a Thai Government hospital would do their best to ensure I have a humane end. Sadly, that hasn't been my experience when relatives have died under the U.K. National Health Service.
