Updating your passport info at your bank or the money will be confiscated rumors. Is ABSOLUTELY FALSE. It’s true that all foreigners with Thai bank accounts need to update their passport information or they will not be able to use the bank phone apps. I bank with Bangkok bank hope this helps and people don’t panic.
I am not understanding the dilemma with Thai bank accounts. It appears that you need a Visa before you can get a bank account and you need a bank account before you can get a Visa??
And that the only way to solve this is through a Visa agent??
I am aware that I am a guest in this country and they make the rules but I can’t understand why a bank would not take your money. Is there some history of fraud that made them wary of foreigners opening bank accounts?
It seems opening a bank account for foreigners is becoming difficult. I just wanted to share our experience. My husband (American) and I (Thai-American) landed in Bangkok on Wed. The first thing we did upon arriving was to obtain a Thai phone for my husband. Once that was done, we received a receipt from AIS with his name, passport number, and his new Thai number listed on the receipt along with the salesperson’s signature. We went to the official AIS store so I’m not sure if the authorized AIS vendor would be able to produce the same receipt. We told the salesperson we needed a phone so my husband could open a bank account. She was the one who offered the receipt to us!
The next day (Thu), we went to the local branch for SCB and Bangkok Bank to try to open an account. We were told it could take about 7-14 business days because they would need to send his application and documents to the HQ office for review. If the HQ office has any questions or need additional information/document, the local bank would contact us. Rather than wasting time going back and forth with the local bank branch, we decided to go directly to the Bangkok Bank HQ in Silom. (Thank you for previous suggestions from this forum about going to Bangkok Bank HQ!) We provided them with the following documents:
* Husband's US passport
* Husband's US driver's license (in the US our driver's license is our ID)
* His Non-O E-Visa based on staying with Thai family visa
* Our US marriage license, which has been authenticated by the Royal Thai Consulate in the US
* My Thai ID
* The official AIS receipt
Even with all these documents, they were still trying to find a way NOT to open an account for my husband. Luckily, I was able to counter all their questions. My husband now has a bank account! The whole process took about an hour. It was a pain but I’m glad we got that done right away. Now we can transfer fund into his account in preparation for visa extension in June!
Bangkok bank 2nd road, Pattaya klang. Just been informed by many of the staff who had a long conversation. Foreigner can no longer open bank account until they're on a long stay visa (not 3 months). I asked even if I het permission letter from immigration? They said NO, because can buy, so we not accept, in other words cos some officials are corrupt and will produce the letter for 500-1000bt, they will not accept. I asked about the insurance policy purchase, no not available to you, only option they gave was a 50k per year life insurance policy, which u commit to for 8yrs, then wait +7 more years for it to mature and with interest it will return approx 450,000bt after 15yrs. Yeah no. Anybody successfully opened a bank account in Pattaya in last 2 months with letter from immigration? Staff were adamant "all banks same"
I have visited multiple banks here in Chiang Mai in the last two months for opening a bank account on DTV. Tried Kasikorn, Siam Commercial, Bangkok Bank and Krungsri.
Somebody recommended TTB and I tried that also but all of them rejected saying it’s a tourist visa or it’s not a work permit. Even when I said its a long term visa, five year visa and I will be spending money: it did not work. Some said they have now strict regulation from the central bank.
Truemoney wallet option: tried this also but it’s not very helpful. If you have to withdraw cash using your foreign card anyway to top up on this app via cash only, then it’s not of any use. Its the same hassle.
Curious how others have navigated this situation? I am aware of agents charging exorbitant amounts.
Greetings to the awesome DTV visa community here that has been so helpful to many people including myself🙏🩵🇹🇭🌴 I have a question and excuse me as I’m sure this has been asked many times before.
I currently have 90 day travel insurance. I will be staying in Thailand as long as possible on this trip. I might be able to get another 90 day insurance policy, but in the long run I need a policy that will cover me monthly as long as I need it.
I appreciate anybody’s help as to recommendations for a quality and inexpensive insurance program for foreigners here in America. Thank you in advance to everybody who offers good solid advice here. Have a great day!
Any USA citizen successfully open a TTB bank account. They are telling me that as an American I need a Thai salary (no other nationalities are subject to this requirement). If yes, please advise on branch, etc
