I've heard a few people report they'd got it done in a week. I don't think you have to make any big payouts before you know if you'll get in.

It's not bad, here's a link to the Washington DC RTE's requirements..essentially the same for UK I believe. If you're willing to do/pay for quarantine, that's the biggest part.

And I believe the process begins by applying online through the Thai Embassy.

Do a search in this group, I'm sure I've seen people post about it on here :-)

Thai Embassy in London is issuing tourist visas now (TR visa, not STV), people have already entered Thailand with it. Look on their website for requirements. It's a 3 month visa, I believe. Yes, there's a bunch of paperwork (doable) and 2 weeks quarantine (up to you if it's worth it :-) )

I think only some origin countries (the one you're in, not your own) require you be a legal resident to enter Thailand. I entered Thailand from Vietnam earlier this month, and I am not a legal resident of Vietnam. There was a list of countries showing which citizens, if leaving from Vietnam, would have to show legal residency, and if they didn't have that, they said the paperwork would take weeks longer. To be fair I didn't enter on the new TR visa, but I would check just to be sure. I'm assuming there's no Thai Embassy in Somalia, so you could check the legal residency requirements/or lack thereof for US citizens departing for Thailand in some nearby countries to possibly avoid going back to the US. Good luck!

I agree, embassies are pretty useless to the average citizen on a daily basis except for passports/notarizations etc.., but in emergencies they can be somewhat useful, such as sending notifications about repatriation flights early in the pandemic (which I wasn't interested in, but could be useful to others) etc..I've lived overseas for 17 years and never had to use them for an emergency, but it doesn't hurt to be registered.

I have no experience with Thai immigration, do visa agents here specialize, as in work specifically with certain types of visas/nationalities etc?

This is a different visa, a TR visa they've just recently made available in many countries. It's done through the Thai Embassy in that country :-)
