What are my options for extending my Medical Treatment visa in Thailand after surgery?

Hi Everyone,

I'll be coming to Bangkok from Vietnam, where I live, for surgery (surgery can't be postponed til later). I'll have a Medical Treatment visa, which should be valid for 60 days and eligible for a 30 day extension, for a total of 90 days.

It will be difficult to get back into Vietnam and may take some time, so after the 90 days on the MT visa, what are my options?

I believe getting a letter from my doctor could help with a further extension, perhaps?

Are there other options, such as changing to another type of visa? Getting a job and work permit?

Thank you for any advice, I've only ever had a tourist visa in Thailand :-)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on what to do after their Medical Treatment visa in Thailand expires post-surgery. They inquire about extending their stay, potentially with a doctor's letter, and are also considering options like switching to a different type of visa or obtaining a work permit. Responses include varied experiences with visa extensions and suggest the possibility of an easy extension due to Thailand's need for tourists.

I think that in this situation visa extension comes easy. Thailand needs tourists

I had surgery on my Achilles tendon in Thailand and Was only able to get a brief medical extension, although I was still having problems ambulating. I discussed the issue frankly with my doctor, and he said the bureaucratic authorities were constantly looking over the doctors shoulders to make sure they were not abusing the privilege. That is only my individual experience and I don’t know if the situation has changed, but you might want to check with your doctor soon after the surgery in order to have more options.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I will definitely be proactive about it and talk to the doctors.

Agents are offering visas but they are not cheap. I have seen 3 month O visa and Volunteer Visas for 12 months going 45k THB upwards.

Probably best to use agent where you are applying for the visa. It is where they have contwcts

It's ok with my to use agents, they're firmly baked into the system in Vietnam and I've been using them for years. Do you have to use an agent from the area that you're staying in? So if I was in Bangkok, I'd have to use an agent there?

Very hard to do it yourself at moment except for spousal/family visa or retirement extension. I know a great agent but she is in Pattaya. Even if you just want to chat about options. I used her in past but no need now as on BOI Visa and WP

thanks Greg, I'll definitely have to look into all of this, types of visas and using an agent vs. doing it myself.
