I presume you have a 12 month extension of stay, is that correct?

If you got a re-entry permit before you left Thailand, when you come back and extend your extension of stay for another12 months, you will be able to get another re-entry permit at the same time and leave Thailand again.

Some people say you can use your Thai driving licence to check into hotels. If that is the case, how can they check your latest visa (I have always had to provide my passport, I tried using my driving licence a couple of times and failed).

yes, that's why I stated it (retirement) was an example (e.g.).

Do you mean visa exempt?

The risks you have by not getting an onward flight is that your airline might refuse your boarding from the UK and if you get past that hurdle Thai immigration might refuse your entry to Thailand.

The only way you are guaranteed to not require an onward flight is if you have a long term Thai visa (e.g. retirement visa).

You can only work at a few occupations in Thailand, like teaching.

If you are wanting to work as a DJ here, I do not think this is possible.

Retirement visa and DTV are probably your best visa options without work.

Why don't you get a non O retirement visa before you fly and then you don't need an onward flight?

It also makes it easier for you to open your bank account in Thailand.

oh wow yes then that seems a great choice, I didn't realise they could still get the affidavit.
