TLDR : Answer Summary
The retirement visa can typically be renewed 30 to 45 days before it expires, depending on the immigration office. While it's possible to apply for a renewal during a brief visit to Thailand, you may need additional time for paperwork and processing. Some users suggest it might be easier to let the current extension expire and apply for a 90-day Non-O visa from Australia, then return to Thailand to apply for a one-year extension later. It's recommended to check with the relevant Thai immigration office or embassy for the latest requirements and advice.

as people pointed out,

it might be easier for you to just let this current extension of stay expire (rather than come to thailand just to get a new extension).

Then get a new 90 day Non-O visa online from the thai consulate in Oz before you come back, and once back burn down the time and then get a year extension.

That might be the easiest course of action for you

Have you spoken to the Thai embassy in Canberra. They may advise with more clarity and may even suggest applying there again prior to returning to Thailand if not extending old visa a new 90 day and extend when back

Why not let it expire and apply for another 90 day non o before you return to Thailand? In other words, start again. I assume you have the financial requirements banked already.

As Ellie and Lloyd have advised you can do it 30 to 45 days before depending on the immigration office you attend. Remember that they don't ink in the extension on that day, usually you would have to return to the office to get it ratified. I may be wrong, I live here on a non O marriage visa extension and have to wait 30 days from application for extension to get it inked in. So I am not sure you can just fly in apply for extension then fly out without having to come back ๐Ÿ”™ n 30 days for confirmation. I may be wrong and more knowledgeable people may advise differently..

As mentioned, 1-year extension based on being over 50 can be applied 30 days in advance in most provides. Some accept 45 days remaining with your current stamp.

The procedure at the immigration office is on-spot (means within a day, a few hours) at most offices. There could be a few offices that you have to go back in a couple of days max.

Other than that, it all depends on how fast you can collect the necessary paperwork, including the lease agreement, bank letter and transaction record, etc. Technically, it's possible to get it done within a few days trip with being well prepared.

Better to try to contact your local office for their latest requirements in advance for preparation.

Don't forget to apply for a re-entry permit AFTER you get a new 1-year extension inked into your passport.

@Ellie ******
thank you for the answer however I have a problem with lease agreement as I will not have one.

Will this be a problem and if so how can I overcome that?

I had to cancel my lease as i don't know how long the treatment will last

@Paul *****
you will need proof of where you're staying here via a TM30,

and what ever proof from the place you're staying, (booking, print out, receipt etc)

I presume you have a 12 month extension of stay, is that correct?

If you got a re-entry permit before you left Thailand, when you come back and extend your extension of stay for another12 months, you will be able to get another re-entry permit at the same time and leave Thailand again.

Generally 30 days before, a few offices will let you do 45 days before.
