TLDR : Answer Summary
The need for an onward ticket when flying with Emirates to Thailand depends on various factors including airline policy and staff discretion. Many travelers have reported being asked about a return or onward ticket, while others have successfully traveled on a one-way ticket without issue. Suggestions include obtaining a non-O retirement visa before traveling or purchasing a low-cost onward ticket as a precaution.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.

How about you ask the airline?

Twice I've flown from the UK with Emirates, both times they asked me for a return ticket, I showed them my OA visa

I can give you a sample with a slightly larger N than just 1 if that has any value to you. I flew Emirates 7 times (6 from AMS, 1 from HKG), and my entry eligibility was checked 6 times in AMS (100%) and 0 times in HKG (0%).

I fly at least twice a year from UK to Thailand with Emirates. I DO have a return ticket with them BUT longer than the 60 days. I have never been questioned about this. I sort out my visa run when I get to Thailand

You can always book a one way Hat Yai to Padang Besar in Malaysia train ticket online for 50 baht.

I just came here on a one way ticket on Cathay Pacific. They just asked me if I had enough funds to cover my stay. I said yes and that was it.

If your worried about the problem then buy a low cost bus ticket out of Thailand and your sorted

A train ticket Nong Khaki to Vientiane is the cheapest way out of Thailand- 120 bahr

Correct

Or cancel and get 50% refund.

ok then you can get a ticket and just forget it when you get into Thailand

They don’t however I purchased a cheap onward flight but they never asked for it

@Nicholas *****
I did the same. Perhaps we weren’t ‘pinged’ for a manual check because onward flight was visible in the airlines booking system?
Peter *********
I done the same but explained retiring not coming back not a problem 👌

Emirates do things by the book

Get your retirement visa before travelling to make things easier

I use Emirates, they have asked me twice and I've shown them my OA visa

I don’t think it’s a matter that some airlines ask and some airlines don’t ask. It’s a matter that some airline agents ask and some airline agents don’t ask or some airline agents ask sometimes and don’t ask sometimes. You really can’t predict it.

Why don't you get a non O retirement visa before you fly and then you don't need an onward flight?

It also makes it easier for you to open your bank account in Thailand.

Ask your airline.

@Frank *********
even if they don't enforce strictly, they'll always say that you need it on the phone. Things like enforcement strictness are much better asked in groups where people can share experiences.

I was hoping to see if anyone had been through this , I think the airline will obviously say yes if I contact them because it generates more money for them
Bart **************
@Pat *******
the airline will indeed always say yes. It's a strange misconception by the senior members in this group who keep advising to ask an airline about their enforcement policy.

The reason they'll always say yes is slightly different though: they are supposed to check this and a check is always possible if the check-in crew has time/feels like doing it. On the phone they cannot promise that you can get away with breaking the rule, they'll always tell you what's officially required.

@Bart *************
Indeed. But sometimes a phonecall helps. EVA Air wanted to see the visa and with no visa (60 days exempt) they wanted to see the return ticket (after 90 ! days). They let you fill in a statement they are not resposible for any return flight should you been refused entry. This was Amsterdam/schihol.

@Peter ***************
ah that's very good! As I said below to someone else, that should happen a lot more often. Leave the responsibility where it belongs. In the airline's conditions you'll find that the passenger is responsible for getting proper visa etc anyway.

Look to the answer of Stuart Chiverton.

@Pat *******
how would it generate more money for them? If you're only buying an onward exit ticket.
Graham ******
@Pat *******
same airline but different airport may be a different answer so just ask the airline
David **********
@Pat *******
get an onward ticket for $10 from bookingforvisa.com It's $10 vs the uncertainty/hassle if they ask.
