TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler mentioned a hotel manager in Jomtien checking their exit date on their UK passport, an event they had not encountered in 16 years of visiting Thailand. Comments suggest this may be a routine practice for hotels to ensure guests are not overstaying their visas, primarily for TM30 registration purposes. Others shared experiences and opinions on the increasing observance of immigration rules in Thailand by various sectors, especially since the digitization of immigration processes.

Maybe he's on a percentage for grassing up overstayers. 😁

I am noticing that all sections of govt are seemingly more observant of the rules, with the digitisation and automation of passports, and visa exemption, lots more undesirable characters are turning up. It follows that hotels and others will be pushed to do the governments work on searching overstays.

Probably looking if you could stay long enough to give you an offer to stay cheaper, if you will stay at than hotel all of your holiday.

They need the information to register TM30. Normally just photocopy data page and entry stamp

Some people say you can use your Thai driving licence to check into hotels. If that is the case, how can they check your latest visa (I have always had to provide my passport, I tried using my driving licence a couple of times and failed).

yeah sure, they need your passport in order to file an online TM30, and as
@Ruth ******
mentioned, the online TM30 form contains an entry that asks for the expiry of the admitted stay permit

I did not say it’s required. I said it’s on the form. As such, hotels may feel they need to enter it.

I always use my driving licence. If they ask for my passport I just say I've forgotten it.

the driving license contains your passport number, so they COULD enter it into the TM30 system, though. But it has no other information, the most important being the expiry of the admitted stay, without which they cannot complete the TM30

Any hotel manager needs your passport, in order to register you properly in the TM30 system. Nothing new there

tm30 expiration date is your lease/rent last day if not owner👍

nope. That would be “checkout date”. The “expire date of stay” is in the visa section, after “type of visa” and before “port of entry”.

the date is then the expiration of the extension of stay...same thing. I don’t know why you feel this desperate need to bicker. Meanwhile , if you didn’t know, why did you argue about it in the first place?

I highly doubt a hotel manager knows how to read and understand immigration stamps in a passport. Hell, even immigration officers at the airport can't understand my visa half the time and have to call over a supervisor.

Probably just putting on a show

why would a Thai have any reason to know how to read an immigration stamp? They don't get Thai immigration stamps. And as I said, even Thai immigration can't understand my visa half the time. You expect a hotel manager to?
