By the way - Krabi Immigration is not in downtown Krabi Town - nor near the airport. It is actually near a big river pier along a long and large avenue of Government buildings. You can't really drive into Laos without a lot of documentation, insurance and hassle, so I recommend the Kiengpiman hotel in Mukdahan, Thailand - drive in the evening before - leave the car - get a tuk tuk next morning to get to the bridge to Savannakhet.

For those under age 50 to get close to a year (up to 9 months) ... You can get a METV - Multi-Entry Tourist at a Thai Embassy/Consulate in your home country. Qualifying requirements are on the website for the Thai Embassy / Consulate in your home country.
