Will Thailand allow border crossing for expats amidst current visa restrictions?

OKAY I hope this guy is wrong. I will be glad to do a Border Bounce IF I can get out of Thailand without facing up to TWO 14 day Quarantines, highly expensive Covid-19 Insurance, A Covid-19 Test that may be quite difficult to get. Question is Thailand going to open the Thai Borders with Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar so we can cross (this is my remedy). I would be glad to fly to some country - get a stamp in and back out IF I could return to Thailand without the hefty restrictions and high expense. If something doesn't change I do not see how it will be possible to do it. So far Malaysia, Myanmar and perhaps Laos have not announced a border opening on August 1. Cambodia could be an option if the $3000 "deposit" has been dropped.

BY THE WAY. I have a Visa good until January 2021. Commenters just need to understand how Non Imm O & B One Year Multi-Entry Visas function. Hint - it is a Visa - not an Extension of Stay.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the uncertainty of Thailand's border policies amidst ongoing COVID-19 restrictions. Many expats express concern about the feasibility of a 'border bounce' to circumvent quarantine and insurance costs in light of potential travel limitations to neighboring countries such as Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Myanmar. Comments suggest that current visa types, particularly the Non-Immigrant O and B Visas, should allow for extensions and internal processing without necessitating border crossings. The consensus is that official announcements from the Thai government are awaited, with many urging patience and caution against speculation.
Av **********
Yeah, from the info i got fron my friend working at immigration, unless u have a education, business visa, residency, or family visa ur not getting back in
Bim *******
I find some of the comments here lack compassion or empathy from those who are fortunate enough that there visa status is sorted making disparaging comments. Not all on the Amnesty are tourists taking a free ride. Those tourists will have homes and jobs they desperately need to get back too but unable to do so because the country's airports have been more or less in lockdown since March. I know of a few. There are migrant workers unable to back home because the borders are closed with no work in Thailand. There are people like me that after 7 years of living here legally in order to get a retirement visa need to border bounce that under normal circumstances would be no problem but unable to do so and as of next week are on the Amnesty and desperately needed it to be extended until the flights and borders are back to normal and causing untold stress.

If they suddenly end the Amnesty with less than three weeks notice it will be a huge PR disaster for this country unless what some believe if the governments agenda is to want to clear out Westerners once and for all I can promise you even your so called safe visas at some point they will come after you making extensions of stay almost impossible. Even Thailand Elite have stopped taking applications so what does that say about how safe your visas are.

Why do you think it will only be Westerners effected. Are you reading too much Thai Visa?

I think this amnesty was meant for people on vacation and caught by the sudden closure of airspace and borders. The Thai government has been very generous to give 4 months of visa extension FOR FREE. FYI an extension of stay is chargeable, people who have a legitimate reason to stay in the Kingdom need to pay THB 1900 for it. Almost all nations had repatriation flights organized so whoever is still here without a valid reason, sorry to say but I dont think it is because of cancelled flights. I think its time to go home for everyone who doesn't belong here, don't you think??

I understand your personal belief. Are you residing in the country you come from? The “centre of life”? And we are no longer on vacation. I cannot return to my job of 10 years in China. And to be forced to go back to the US, a place that is worse off now, is unreasonable. If you can afford to stay here, it should be no problem. Your money goes into the troubled Thai economy.

I don’t think it’s time for everybody to go home. People should just stay put—not risk a “Columbian Exchange” of microbes. It has nothing to do with “generosity”. I believe more in keeping the world together. Not “them” vs “us”. And tourism is about 20% of the Thai GDP. Why get rid of the remnants of that 20%? NOBODY is coming to do tourism in the near future here.
Stefan ************
@Daniel *******
people should be where their centre of life is and not go on vacation.
Roy ***********
@Daniel *******
I do agree with your arguments, it seems better to me if people van stay here a bit longer. Less risk of spreading Covid, and they are not hurting anybody.

But it seems Thai security agencies will not allow another amnesty. They realy hate not being in control and knowing all about you.

I do not like the "them" vs "us" Thailand is showing now also. But it is their country, we are just guests.

- Repatriation flights did not provide enough seats in some cases. The queue of Russians trying to get on one of the repatriation flights provided by Aeroflot had a backlog of over 10,000. The flights were discontinue MD with several thousand not being able to fly out. One Russian man with wife and child finally had to create a pathway home with a flight to Belarus - then walk across the border - next catch a train to the interior of Russia. How many more Russians still here - unknown. All in all it has not been so simple as described by some.
Stefan ************
@Joe **********
yes there might be cases like that. But this i think are rare exceptions. The German government for example offered stranded people a ticket home for EUR 100 (with obviously more extra cost after returning home), however I know of a few guys who are still here and enjoying it.... for those, time to go home I think. And then again, sorry to say, if you embarked on a journey by early / mid March and if you are not totally ignorant about what was going on in Asia at that time...you should have known the risk.

Not true. It's very difficult for a Thai person to visit a western country even pre covid. Many expats want to take their wives and girlfriends back home to visit but cant get a Visa yet nearly every westerner could come to Thailand pre Covid. Most if the people here in Amnesty made no attempt to return home and cant expect indefinite amnesty. There have been half empty flight leaving Thailand for months but people saw it as a loophole to stay. unfortunately some people did lose a lit if money buting tickets on flights that were cancelled.

What about people who had flights canceled and can’t leave? Not surprised by the way Immigration in Thailand does business anyways. They don’t follow the law. They deny people with Tourist visas with lies saying “you are only allowed 2 tourist visas per year” or some BS like that. So I think the Thai economy suffered so much from loss of revenue that they somehow need to make their money back by charging overstay fees with whoever decides to stay in Thailand after the Amnesty goes away.
Kevin *****
@Matt ******
when I first came here and was having to do border bouncing while I waited for the papers to get my Non B for work I did 2 Kanchanuri runs and then flew out to Vietnam and had 2 days there then came back on an exemption and got a grilling by customer who told me that no, I could not do 2 flights and 6 border bounces (as the government says, you can only do one border bounce, after that you have to go out for 1 month before you come back. Their own staff don't know/don't want to follow their own legislation before Covid, can't see they'll be any more helpful now. All the confusion will just make a lovely cash cow for the IO's at airports and land crossings "no, cannot do...well.... maybe way to do but expensive 😉😉😉"
Michael ********
Its actually six month cummulative per year for tourist. They figure if you want to stay for more thsn six months you are not a tourist

@Joe **********
correct but the point was if someone is continually border hopping, under a visa exempt or tourist visa, then are they actually a tourist or are they living here? That's up to the immigration officer to decide, as you say.
Joe ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Darren ******
- I am not saying that a person will not be denied entry into Thailand after combinations of Exemption Entries or Tourist Visas... What I am saying is that there is no stated rule by which an airport I/O or Border I/O allows or denies entry .. They apply their own subjective rules .. not a rule book. Exception is 2 land entries max in one calendar year.
Darren *******
@Joe **********
I'm agreeing with you, it for the immigration officer to decide
Chris ************
@Michael *******
it was 90 days per 180 days if i remember correct.

cummulative by single and double entry tourist visa and/or entry by visa exemption.

but maybe that changed at that time when they stopped the double entry tourist visa and created the multiple entry tourist visa.
Tod *********
@Michael *******
that is fake but often quoted (and even on a few b/s thai websites) BUT there is NO real rule about how long you as a tourist can be here on either 30 day visa exempt entries OR 60 day tourist visa entries.

The ONLY real rule is that people from 51 countries can enter on a 30 day visa exempt entry TWO times by land in a calendar year.
Greg ********
There is no "Law" on the number of visa free entries or tourist visas. It is up to the Immigration Officer if he allows you entry. You can appeal to his superior if he does. If you have a tourist visa and due to say th number you have he suspects you are not a genuine tourist but someone residing here he can refuse you. This is the case in every country in the world - if the IO thinks you are not there for the intent of your visa they can refuse you entry. Wake up and smell the coffee and face the truth - not your made up version of it
Matt *******
@Greg *******
Then why can that denied tourist easily go to Laos and enter through the border with no problems at all? Before covid hit there was a huge problem of airport immigration officers denying tourists just because of the amount of visas in their passport, but when they enter through a land border the officers there let them in with no questions asked even with the big “denied entry” stamp on the same page. Cause they know it’s a BS denial.
Greg ********
@Matt ******
A visa is not guarantee of entry in any country in the world. The Immigration Officer can refuse you if he feels he has grounds too. This is a very simple concept that you do not seem to be able to grasp
Darren *******
@Matt ******
you could counter argue and say people who are hopping in and out on visa exemptions/tourist visas for months at a time aren't necessarily tourists and are perhaps starting a life here? Whether that is of benefit to the economy is another debate entirely.

- Tod - I admire you as a friend and for your expertise in the Thai Visa arena... But you are Way too Cavalier about this situation.. As of today there are three (3) weeks left until July 31. In all seriousness your advice to sit back and take it easy is a Non Starter. If those who needed an answer in the weeks leading up to the near forced Amnesty we have now had followed your type of advice - likely nothing would have been done - except dump us on the border. Now with this Amnesty we do not have widely published photos of Immigration queues 300 deep all across Thailand to embarrass Thai Immigration into doing the right thing. This announcement today by a Thai Immigration Spokesman (as low ranking as he is) is very unsettling. Without public embarrassment causing Thai Immigration to Do Something - likely nothing will be done - except the clock running out. There is nothing going on in the news media now to push and shove Thai Immigration and the Thai Legislature (who ever they are) to do anything positive to resolve - yet again another looming crisis.

We need relief. As I said in another thread. Anyone Not Affected by this series of ineffectual screwups has no idea of the anxiety caused by recalcitrant jackasses in Thai Immigration. We cannot sit by and abide by useless comments.

Funny how its not an official statement and has been released by news sites who thrive on this kind of article.

Go back to the beginning when this started and how immigration made people go stand for hours at immigration offices for hours in a panic to extend visa's because they didnt know what was happening, when in fact people didnt need to extend that early.

Immigration will know what is happening when its decided by the Government.
Ron ******************
I think extensions but with 90 day reporting coming back. This way they can keep track of the people. No reason not to have 90 day reports. Also maybe forced download of tracking app.
Todd *********
90 day reporting is an absolutely idiotic concept
Ron ******************
@Todd ********
what we think does not matter. At present with CV 19 around 90 day reporting makes sense. Thai people have house books and ID cards which links them to an address. Unless you have a yellow book and pink ID card they cannot link you to an address without 90 day reports or change if address notification. For contact tracking they need to know where people stay. The new normal has caught up with an old reality (90 day reports).

They've already adjusted the rules for most foreigners with valid visas to extend within the country. I'm sure they will do the same for the exceptional cases that have been missed. However, it's likely to become difficult to live long term in Thailand disguised as a tourist, and anyone doing so should probably book a flight home asap, and prepare to stay there for a while.
Darren *******
@Oliver *******
completely agree with the living as a tourist part...although I'm sure some of them will come along and tell us how their life is here, contributing to economy and how Thailand will cease to exist without them etc
Oliver ********
@Darren ******
yeah no doubt they will explain how everyone in isarn would starve to death if it wasn't for them renting hookers in pattaya

Official announcement is needed - rumours abound all the time and are often wrong until the last minute.......BUT I think the old 1 day bounce is not gonna happy for a while. You may be really lucky, but Thailand want Visa applications and Covid tests etc in that country and stopped VoA and via free entry, so a lot has to change to go back to the old in/out routine. Much better they let people pay to extend their Visa, given as many may find it less than easy to actually find flights home
Darren *******
@Ian ****
border bounces are long gone I reckon. Land borders will be for locals only for foreseeable future in my opinion.

I hope they let people here on current visas switch in country instead of having to leave and come back, eg non-O to non-B. I don't think they'll let people on the amnesty switch but I reckon they'll offer some form of extension for a fee but probably no additional extensions after that.

Ultimately, like everything right now, the above is my opinion. It may be completely wrong, it may be partially right etc, no one knows.

@Darren ******
. I think you're pretty well on the right track. The long stay visas should be totally managed in-country not at some Godforsaken outpost a thousand kilometres from Bangkok. As for the tourists, guys you've had a great free run. Time to think about moving on
Todd *********
@Bobby *******
this is true.... however, at the same time thailand is trying to develop a coherent plan to bring in tourists (it's critical)... why kick out 100,000 covid free tourists already here.
Bobby ********
@Todd ********
. Ha! Makes perfect sense to me and I'm sure many others. They're being if not obstructive but certainly unsupportive of letting any expats back in, so you would think having a large number of tourists who are happy to stay and spend money at the lower end of the community (street food, bars etc, where it's actually needed) would make brilliant sense, but when you read the statement

“There most likely will not be an extension. It’s all quiet on that front. It’s been a long time and we need to clear out people,” Phakkaphong said. “Thailand and the Thai government are already generous. No other country has this long of a visa amnesty.”

you do have a rethink on commonsense values. AND if they started charging the tourists the standard 1900 baht for each additional month, this would bring much-needed foreign money into the coffers. This may still happen, and I think is why the overflow immigration office is re-opening on Monday. I expect an official announcement on Monday.

Personally I'd like to see more effort put into getting longstay visa holders back into Thailand. I know they have to cater for their own citizens, but again, each longstay expat will be pumping a minimum 35,000 baht into the economy just for the cost of the quarantine.

But perhaps I'm looking at things from the wrong perspective
Todd *********
and one would think they would be all over some continuation scheme (Stay COVID safe in Thailand) for 60, 90 0r 180 day terms at say 10-

baht
Todd *********
@Bobby *******
i totally agree really.... ur right the words in that quote are dramatic for sure. "no other country has this long of a visa amnesty' is 100% untrue. BUT, they have different names for it. EU is already extended until 31 Oct
Bobby ********
@Todd ********
. Where did you get the 100,000 figure from? If this is correct the Thai government could be raising 200million baht every month through selling extensions. I'm no accountant but that bottom line looks good to me.
Todd *********
@Bobby *******
i have no idea, just a pure guess - but in march the suggestion was over 500k. I'm guessing 80% have gone home? And yes-your math looks good. They know though.... how many people are still here on a tourist visa. Somebody can definitely identify that number

I think we need to wait and see what the official announcements are. Certainly they understand the boarder issues. I am hoping they will announce some kind of internal options for people still here (get 90day stamp for a valid ME visa without leaving Thailand, purchase a further extension within Thailand, covert to non b if you have a job etc). That seems more likely to me then reopenong boarders with other countries for bounces or other visa runs since that would take 2 governments to agree to in a short timeframe.
Paul ********
@Geoff *********
Proper wait n see ??? Farang will King
Greg ********
Yeah - they should allow conversion to B internally for those holding job offers. Those married or can qualify for retirement extesins too. That leaves those on visa exempt and tourist visa on a sticky wicket though.
Bobby ********
@Greg *******
. Realistically the tourist visas and visa exempts have had a good free run. I'd like to see some effort put into the O, B and ED visas without this ridiculous need to border bounce to change a f*****g visa category. What can border immigration officers at often isolated borders do that immigration officers at an office in Thailand can't. It's never made sense to me, and this is the ideal opportunity for Thai immigration to overhaul these outdated practices
Greg ********
@Bobby *******
Totally agree on both points. This is an ideal chance to stop the bending of the rules with border runs / living here on visas meant for tourism not residence. The second, totally why require people to border bounce on longer term residency visas?
Bobby ********
@Gr**
. I don't know if you've been to that crazy border out past Kanchanaburi, where often you don't even leave the country, someone just ferries your passport over the imaginary line. How can that really be favoured over a trip to an immigration office in a city or large town? I just don't see that one
Greg ********
@Bobby *******
I have only ever done one land border run. When I cancelled retirement visa last year I had 7 days to leave. Did a border run to Cambodia on the Saturday. Flew to Singapore the Monday and applied for Non-B for work then back after a few days. 20 odd years ago passports used to go to Penang from Bangkok without their owners but that is all I am saying :-)
Bobby ********
@Greg *******
. The Kanchanaburi passport transit is completely legal. It's too far to walk over to the Myanmar border control, so the bus driver collects the passports whilst the bouncers all sit in the coffee shop for half an hour. It's simply an accepted practice. The reason I mentioned is because it enables people to get another stamp, which sensibly they could have got at CW or another IO. Why did you have to traipse to Singapore to change a retirement visa to a B visa? It does not make any logistical sense

@Lindsey *********
. That border is not open at this time.
Greg ********
Surely they must allow people some time to make arrangement. It is normally 7 days - they should allow an extra 30 days to be applied for at 1900 THB. I just cannot see how they are going to allow a border bounce though - visa exempt looks like postponed and where would you get a tourist visa?
Steve *******
@Greg *******
They've already given people 4 months to make arrangements
Roy ***********
@Greg *******
They must allow people to make arrangements.

This man is saying this so you have three weeks to make arrangements after you already had 3 months to make arrangements.

But you can also just wait another week what the official statement will be. Maybe they have a nice idea to not give amnesty, but extend visas in Thailand.
Greg ********
@Roy **********
Agree with you about 3 months to make arrangments. Yes some like India no flights but others have had plenty of opportunity. Theu hand might e forced soon - if it was me I would be looking at options
Steve **********
Joe I think you are screwed if you cannot extend they way you are in the country right now. It won’t even be a matter of if the other land borders open. You hit the nail on the head with the biggest issue, I seriously don’t think they are going to accept tourists any time soon. Of course, I don’t know anything and am guessing but if I had to bet my money is on not opening up to anything other than the categories recently announced for a while.

I am on a Multi-Entry Non B One Year. I can qualify for an Extension of Stay one year. But it is my last resort.

good luck my man!

Thanks for sharing that. I'd guess they want to give a bit of a push now, get some people to move out of fun the country and then maybe give some leeway to those left.

Cambodia is also under visa restrictions
