In May my wife and I will be going to Thailand for 7 weeks on a Non-Immigrant O Visa – we are 77 and from the United States. Unfortunately, we can not stay long enough to season our money in the bank since we are going to Africa to do a gorilla trek and our dates are set. Our goal on this trip is to set up bank accounts to deposit 800K into each account using wise. We have rented an Airbnb condo and have received from the owner the 7-week lease, her ID card, and her ownership of the condo document. In December we will return on a new Non-Immigrant O Visa and after two months apply for an extended stay permit for a year.
Our Problem: I am reading in Facebook that Kasikornbank (K-Bank) and other banks will not allow us to open bank accounts with that short a lease (even though we will have a TM30, Certificate of Residence, photos, and Thai phone numbers linked to our passports).
I see 3 possible outcomes:
1. Kasikornbank will allow us to open accounts.
2. We have to rent a cheap condo while we are gone for a year ($300/mo) just to have a lease.
3. Use an agent.
From your experience, will Kasikornbank allow us to open an account. Are some branches or cities better to use? If not, and we have to use an agent, what would the cost be using our own money and not the agent’s.
Does anyone have recent experience with Thai banks accepting a DTV (Workation) visa for opening or maintaining a bank account?
I understand that Bangkok Bank currently requires Non-Immigrant O, LTR or Thailand Elite, and does not accept DTV.
I’m specifically interested in whether any other banks or branches (e.g. Kasikorn, SCB, Krungsri, etc.) have accepted DTV, given that it is a 5-year, multiple-entry visa.
Thanks in advance for sharing real-world experience 🙏
visited a couple of banks and it seems that it’s impossible to get a bank account with a holding DTV now. the staff mentioned they are much stricter and only with a letter of employment / retirement visa are you allowed to open an account
I want to open an account at Krunghthai Bank, because they have a branche in the village I will live from this November on. Anyone experience with Krungthai Bank?
Has anyone managed to get a Thai Tax Identification number. How was the process. They are saying after 180 days here we become tax residents, but can’t open bank accounts etc. was just wandering how straightforward it is to get the TIN? Many thanks. 🙏🏻
After reports in this group that TTB accepts the DTV for opening bank accounts, I visited the Central Festival Pattaya branch. And they refuse to even consider opening an account without a work permit.
Has anyone opened a bank account with them recently? If so, which branch? I don't mind going to Bangkok or another nearby city to open an account.
