Transferring 400k baht into Thai bank account safely

So I have just flown into Thailand today on my non o visa. Just a question I have just got my SIM card and opened up a bank account. Just wondering what is the best way to transfer the 400k baht into the Thai bank account from Australia. Thanks for the advice in advance.

Cheers!
Answer summary
The conversation revolves around transferring 400,000 Baht from Australia to a Thai bank account after arriving in Thailand on a Non-O visa. Various methods are discussed, with a focus on using services like Wise and Revolut for better exchange rates and lower fees compared to traditional banks. Users recommend transferring in smaller amounts as a safety measure and ensuring the transfers are coded as international to comply with Thai immigration requirements. Options such as bank-to-bank transfers and other financial services like Remitly and XE Money are also mentioned, along with advice on keeping records for immigration purposes.

Wise is the most cost-effective way. Bank-to-bank transfers are easy, but not cheap.

First, the banks charge you too much to move the money

Second, you usually get a lousy exchange rate

Caution with Wise - sometimes they take 4-5 days to transfer the money to Thailand

The safest way is to go on Facebook and try and find any Thai person and then simply ask for their address and exchange the money locally in your own country into Thai Baht first. Then place that money in an envelope and post it to that person and ask them to deposit it in your Thai account. Simple, easy, reliable, and 100% safe.

What is your definition of "best"? Aus bank to Thai bank is safest, just make sure you have the SWIFT code of the Thai bank . Send it in Aussie dollar, let the Thai bank change it...better rate. Wise may have a better exchange rate but they work on a percentage basis for their fees while your bank is usually a fixed rate, so on large amounts WISE can be more expensive. If your Thai bank is one of WISE's partners the transaction is almost instantaneous, if that matters. One more thing..have you considered Thai tax liabilities? It's suggested that you keep assessable and non assessable income separate, so if this money is non assessable but your regular income will be assessable keep your remittances easily identifiable. My non taxable income comes via Westpac, taxable via WISE.

Josh, I transfer 65k THB to my Thai account each month from Australia. I use NAB then send it through Wise using PayID option, pay by email. It is very easy. When setting the transfer up in Wise be sure to mark it as "funds for long term stay", in the next menu make sure to mark it "need proof of international transfer" (maybe you need it, maybe not but in my case as a retiree I do) I use KBank in Thailand and it has not failed me so far. Good luck.

I use bank transfer.

Better exchange rate (but close) to both Remitly and Wise.

My bank (Swedish Swedbank) charge 5 euro no matter if it’s 100k THB or 2m THB.

For some reason someone steals about 400 THB before my money reach my account every time but I can live with that.

Takes about 2-3 days so you can’t be in a hurry.

I transferred 2 million Baht and was worried about doing it so I sent the first million with a Currency Company who advertised as no fees. However you get rubbish rate and it took a week to get there because once it was locked in they started asking questions, whereas in the beginning they made it sound like a quick simple process. I transferred the other million with Wise which I use all the time. Even with the fee it was cheaper to do than with Currencies Direct because you get better rate and it was there the same day. In many countries exchanging cash of this amount in USD or GBP to another currently then trying to deposit this into a bank would raise questions re money laundering and the source of it. UK Banking automatically flag any cash transaction about GBP8,000 or about THB350K and ask to see evidence of sources. Perhaps Thailand is different, but it's a hell of chance to take!

Many people use Wise for transferring larger amounts into Thailand because the rates and fees are usually better than traditional banks, but for visa purposes it’s important to make sure the transfer record clearly shows the funds coming from overseas into your Thai account. Since this is for a Non-O visa, I’d also recommend double checking the immigration requirements with a professional before moving the funds. I work with a Bangkok law firm that assists foreigners with visa and banking matters regularly — feel free to DM me if you’d like guidance.

Andrew, in case helpful .. Revolut are now a UK regulated bank (safer if they fail than non-regulated) and offer generally excellent exchange rates. They may have an entity in places like Australia also, I'm not sure. I'm British and they have always worked well for me in Singapore, KL and Thailand, but then everyone has different needs I appreciate. They are a major competitor to WISE. They may or may not be better, it depends on the scenario. I'd suggest checking both. The advantage of Revolut if you are British or hold an account there is that as an office "bank" now in the UK any transfer from them there is treaded in a similar way in theory as an international transfer from HSBC etc as it is "official" unlike pure exchange rate brokers. I've used them for years, but in Sing and KL and now moving to Thailand where I've been using for day to day expenses. Obviously different things work for different people ...
