What are the pros and cons of getting a Thai Elite Visa for long-term stay?

After living 25 years in Thailand, I returned to Europe in 2024 due to my declining health. Now, I feel better and I decided to make a trip to Thailand to visit my old friends.

I would stay 3 to 6 months (longer than a trip with a VOA) but I would return to Europe. This way I would benefit for my travel insurance with my health care (repatriation in case of an urgency).

At my age, 72 years, I don't want dance at the imaginary rules of an immigration officer anymore. I want to get a Multiple Entry visa with "peace of mind".

The 5-year VIP visa, at a price of 500,000 baht seems to be a good solution.

Get 5 year travelling in and out of Thailand at free will; No problem with 90-days report (reporting is done at the VIP visa center), Get help with opening a bank account; Etc.

500,000 baht is a lot of money, but at my age money is not so important anymore. If I die, the taxman will take 60% of my money anyhow.

So, better enjoy it now.

What are the pro and contra opinions of this?
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around an expat's desire to return to Thailand after 25 years, focusing on visa options suitable for a long-term stay of 3 to 6 months in light of his health issues. The main suggestion is obtaining a Thai Elite Visa, which offers benefits such as hassle-free immigration processes, no need for continuous reporting, and peace of mind. Comments provide various opinions on elite versus alternative visas, including the benefits of enlisting a reliable visa agent to handle immigration tasks and exploring options like the LTR visa for wealthy pensioners. Key points include the high cost of the Elite Visa (500,000 to 650,000 baht) versus potential alternatives, lifestyle choices, and the importance of maintaining health insurance for expatriates.

I assume you mean using the VA to circumvent the 800k THB requirements. If it has worked no problems for 2 years why change?
Trivino *********************
Trivino *********************
OP
Warwick Cook Wrong assumption.

The 800k baht was never a problem.

The problem was the constant bickering of the immi officers about the documents and the amount of photocopies.

Making me running back and forth to the copy shop for nothing.

If the 800k was a problem, I would not think of an elite visa.

Warwick ******
You misunderstand my reply(s). Obviously if you can afford to pay away for an Elite Visa the 800K is not a problem and in your OP you stated stated funds are not an issue. I was perhaps questioning the "method" being employed by the agent. My suggestion was rather than you going to Immigration and do the dancing/jumping through the hoops/bending over backwards etc. etc. why not just enlist the services of a good agent to do all that "stuff" on your behalf at far less overall cost. You then indicated you had utilised the services of an agent for the last two years "without any problem" which, to me, indicates satisfaction with the agent's work. Again my question remains - why change from using the agent? Ultimately you must do what makes you happy so......
Trivino *********************
Trivino *********************
OP
Warwick Cook I used the services of the Visa Agency when I was living in Thailand.

Now, I am already 2 years living in Europe and I am very happy with the Health services and the Public services in my country. Don't want to lose these services or start the enquiries for these services again because of a long vacation to Thailand and maybe other SE Asian countries.

The best option to do this is (in my opinion) apply for an Elite Visa and "F*ck all" the Immi departments.

5 Year free to travel in-and-out of Thailand without the struggle in a LEGAL way.

That was also the question in my OP.

Let's break down the cost of the Elite visa (650,000 Baht)

- 650,000 / 5 = 130,000 Baht/year.

- 130,000 / 37.89 = 3,431 EUR/year

- I have about 35,000 EUR pension a year.

Up to you to decide if about 10% of your income is worth the peace of mind to stay in Thailand or not.

Off topic,

I don't know if the "false" perception of the cost of living is inherent to people who have been living too long in Thailand, but reading this thread makes it TRUE.

I had a German friend who was always complaining when his kids asked 100 baht for some school material but on the other hand was putting a 500baht note in the knickers of a gogo girl or buying a basket of ping pong balls for 1000 baht without complaining.

Does staying in Thailand have thus strange effect on all expats?

Get a retirement visa of 90 days(you are 50+ "plus point"). In case you need to stay longer then 90 days so just apply for 1 year extension but putting 800k in the thai bank account.. Save money..

I am assuming you already have a Thai bank account from your previous 25 years.... Get a 90 day Non-O E-Visa. On arrival (welcome back!) enlist the services of a reputable visa agent. If no bank account they can get your certificate of residence to facilitate the opening of a bank account. Put the required 800k THB into the account. When the 90 days are about to expire let the visa agent do the dancing with immigration for the 12 month extension of stay and multiple re-entry stamp... Continue to use the agent for your 90 day reporting and annual extension. Let them dance on your behalf at way less cost than an Elite Visa. All the other perks of the Elite can be purchased as one-offs as and when required. Only effort required on your part is a few visits now and again to your agent. Treat them as a special day out visiting a friend who is a very good dancer😁

I completely understand you 🙏🏻 I am in a similar situation but much younger. My husband and I are 8-10 years from meeting the retirement visa age. We could go on the DTV but we would prefer to buy a home (lease for 30 years) as it works out cheaper than renting over 10 years (it's around 80k GBP as we want a Thai style house but modernised inside with garden space for our dogs (we are viewing a few next week). We live very simple lives. We don't want the hassle of constant reporting or travelling every 6 months. We are really old souls in young(er) bodies. We love books, nature, walks, eachothers company doing simple things and good year round weather that doesn't fall below 0 degrees! (Which is at least 4 months in the UK)! We are going to buy the 10 year elite/privilege visa. Can we afford it ? Well yes but it doesn't leave our pension pot big and the feeling we're chucking away over 50 grand in £'s. However, the money we will save with the 6 monthly travel, accommodation costs, not having bank account hassles etc, we have decided in the long run if you work out costs of dtv courses, then 6 months of cheap'ish travel and stays x 2 people - over 10 years it adds up!

I get we lose the money but we're paying for security to stay, to live in our hopes and dreams of a future in the mountains in Thailand (North), enjoy our home for 30 years. I too have gone through medical things the last few years and it just puts everything into prospective.

I always thought being happy, simply, was selfish. But that's just guilt I realised I have for those we leave behind to venture out on our own paths.

Time is precious, waste it wisely - we can't take our money with us!

I'm also not entirely reckless, we will put our money in low and medium risk savings etc that will accumulate an income as well as our jobs outside of Thailand. A lot of people tell us to rent our home out in the UK and use that income but selling gives us a big pot to play with and invest/save. Renting is a headache with so many new rules that have been introduced and the fees you pay for management just isn't worth it. Go and enjoy your life, you have many years left and by the sounds of it, you truly deserve to live as happily and peacefully as you can 🙏🏻

MangoStickyRice4me if you have jobs outside Thailand which you will work remotely there are only 2 visas which will legally allow you to do so, the DTV based on Workation or the LTR Work From Thailand Professional visa. A Thai Privilege visa (Elite) doesn't provide the right to work in Thailand, remotely or otherwise.

Jim McGowan see it as a diversification of your capital. I put my 800k in the account in 2006. Never touched it. Changed at the time for about 50 to the Euro (30% above today), got good interest for 15 years ... always 2.5 to 3%. Now it's just 1%, but ok, it will go up again. So, made about +70% in 20 years, good enough to fight inflation and have a bit extra.

Long-Term Resident Visa

Retirees aged 50 years and older who have an annual pension or stable passive income.

Minimum unearned or passive income* of USD 80,000 / year at the time of application (Note that earned income and salaries WILL NOT be considered for the personal income requirement for wealthy pensioners).

- unearned or passive income includes, but are not limited to pension, rental, realized capital gain, dividend and interest payments

- Insured under a health insurance covering a minimum of USD 50,000 OR currently receiving social security benefits in Thailand OR deposit and maintain at least USD 100,000 in bank account balance under the applicant’s name for no less than 12 months.

- I don't have USD 80,000/year pension.
