I’m an American and plan to apply from my home for the 90 tourist visa. If approved the plan is to fly to Thailand and do the Non -O there using an agent the first time. My question is I have 2 misdemeanor charges from early 1984 and 1989. (PI and theft under $5.)Is this going to be a problem securing a retirement visa? I have the necessary income etc…
Answer summary
The original poster inquired about the impact of two old misdemeanor charges on their ability to secure a Non-O retirement visa in Thailand. The community clarified that minor criminal convictions should not affect the visa application and emphasized the importance of applying for the Non-O visa before entering Thailand, rather than using a tourist visa. Several commenters provided guidance on the application process and bank requirements, noting that entering on a tourist visa would complicate obtaining residency and the necessary financial documentation.

You need a Non-Imm O visa applied before entering Thailand. Then few days after your arrival, go to local immigration to ask further information what you need to prep during your 60 days + 30 days extension on your non-imm O visa. It is also for your BEST INTEREST to IMMEDIATELY go to the bank(s) and open up a saving account, deposit a sum of $$$ as recommended by your Immigration Officer (400k baht for marriage-based visa & 800k for retirement, seasoned and untouched for 2 months).

A Tourist Visa will do you NOTHING but sightseeing and leave the country safely. Some local agency might be able to help you to "convert" your Tourist Visa for a fee equivalent of a roundtrip ticket business class from wherever your origin is.

Will not effect a non O, but DO NOT come on a tourist visa which is 60 days, not 90. Apply for the non O from home.

You’ll pay an Agent 65-85k to get it all done just get the non-o at home get here open a bank account and get your 800k in it and I know nobody wants to put that in a Thai bank so if that’s the reason then pay if you like but if you don’t have the funds don’t even bother retiring here if your short

Go online to the Thai evisa website. It will ask you to choose the Thai Embassy in Washington DC, OR whichever Thai consulate responsible for the area where you live. Fill out the application for the retirement Non-Immigrant O visa, which provides a single entry and permission to stay for 90 days. Arrive in Thailand, go to Kasikorn Bank (do NOT go to Bangkok Bank) with the necessary paperwork and open your bank account. If you have the money and the luxury to set it aside for a while, I recommend opening two bank accounts: a personal savings account for day to day expenses and a fixed deposit account to do two things: secure a credit card and hold the 800K baht required to apply for the 1 year extension of your 90 day Non Immigrant O visa. Get the extension and live happily ever after or at least until you have to make your first 90 days report and, later, apply for the annual extension. By the way, I recommend applying for the Non-Immigrant O-A visa, the one that requires the FBI criminal background check. It is multiple entry and has an initial term of a year. Ask a Thai immigration lawyer about the misdemeanors.

Charges or convictions there’s a difference. I was charged with selling stolen firearms arm but the charges were dismissed.

Did it happen in the county you are currently living in? If no then you could get a clearance from a county level!

Only the Non-O will help you to open a bank account. NOT the tourist visa.

Your confused. You should get the non-O visa before you arrive.. that's the retirement visa.

There is no background check involved with the non-O visa.

Your plan truly makes no sense though. Why would you buy a tourist visa to arrive and then pay hundreds of dollars to get the non-O visa from an agent? You can just apply for the non-O visa online, and then if you want to use an agent for the extension, it will be SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper since you are already on non-immigrant status.

I’m confused. I was thinking the 90 day tourist was needed to enter Thailand while securing the needed bank account and residence. I’m still figuring it out

Scott Dodge You are just mixing up the terminology

Go online the the Thai Visa website.

Apply for Visa (not to exceed 90 days). Arrive in Thailand and meet with your agent. Usually within the first week.

If you need a good agent, dm me. I am going through the process now.

I can explain more there

Scott Dodge you are confusing the visas .You should get the 90 day non o retirement in your home country not a tourist visa

I don't think there is even a 90 day tourist visa? i think you are on the right track but just calling the visa by the wrong name. As others have pointed out it is a non O 90 day visa that you initially require.

Scott Dodge no, Brandon is correct. Do the non immigrant o visa single entry 90 days and 'upgrade' within that time. Don't worry about the minor criminal past. You're leaving the US, not going to it.

Scott Dodge Tourist visa will not allow you to open a bank account. You’d have to leave the country and reapply for non-O from outside the country.

Why would an embassy require a Thai bank account for a visa for someone visiting Thailand? That doesn't make any sense.

You get the non-O visa from the Thai embassy using any bank account. Then you use that visa to get the Thai bank account. If you enter Thailand as a tourist, you CANNOT get a bank account, and therefore CANNOT get the visa in Thailand, because the requirement to get the visa in Thailand is to have the money in a Thai bank account.
