I would likevsome help please.

I came to Thailand on 27th November 2025, we left for Malaysia after 50 days and spent a long weekend in this lovely country, we returned and they stayed my passport with another 60 days, however I left after5 weeks as originally planned.

Fast forward to last Thursday, my lovely Thai mother in law suffered a stroke so I booked a one way ticket for my wife as we don't know how long she will need to stay.

I booked just 3 weeks arriving 25th May and leaving on 19th June.

At immigration the officer told me I should have applied for a visa, anyway after much toing and froing he let me in.

I just want to know if this problem was caused by my own ignorance because in fairness he may have just been doing his job.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Keep up the great work you do here.
Answer summary
An expat in Thailand shared their experience of entering the country as a tourist while facing potential immigration issues due to the duration of their stays. They were initially allowed entry despite not having a visa, but were informed by immigration that their situation might require a NON-O visa based on their marriage to a Thai national. Community members advised that multiple entries and long stays may not align with tourist activities and recommended applying for the appropriate visa in the future to avoid complications. They highlighted that recent restrictions have made it important for expats with Thai families to follow correct visa protocols.

Steve, intend to do the same, visit neighbouring countries while we're there but will apply for the 90 days retirement visa. I read online there's no limit to the number of entry as long as you apply a fresh visa before each visit.

Should have kept quite about the sick MIL… as it would have negated the ‘tourism’ aspect…

it is very common for a Thai wife to stay longer than Foreign hubby who many a time stays shorter to get back home to work

Russ Marriott Good point Russ, just trying to be honest with the Immigration Officer. He was very pleasant throughout the discussion and after granting me access smiled and wished us luck with Mum.

Go to your local immigration office, preferably with your Thai partner, and speak with them. With the full info in their possession and not being forced into a quick decision you’re likely to find them receptive

How would that have helped if they would not have let him in the country?

I was referring to him getting in on a visa free but possibly needing to extend his stay

2 x 60 days in 12 months isn’t really a tourist . And so quickly

As another said get a non o visa .

Garry Gavin why isn't it? I do it and I know quiet a few people who do. Not everyone is employed. I retired early a few years ago and have been staying for just under 60 days.

Paul Malcolm visa exempt is for short tourist or business stays, that is also why they go back to 30 days somewhere in the near future.

If you have Thai wife you can get non-o marriage, if you over 50 you can get non-o retirement.

Their decisions are based on how long you have been staying in the country. If it doesn’t look like ‘tourist activity’ then you get flagged. I’ve been through the same.

Ralph Tyson No, it’s just arbitrary nonsense.

They have been cracking down on people entering too many times as a tourist and spending too much time in Thailand. They see it as you have a Thai wife, and have visa options available to you, so you are not a tourist.

They let you in this time but warned you that next time you should apply for a non-O visa based on having Thai family.

If you are gone at least 6 months between your next trip, you can probably still arrive visa exempt if you don't plan on staying long.
