Hi. Has anyone recently applied for Non- b visa in Penang?

1. Do I need an appointment?

2. where can I find the checklist for required documents?

I can't seem to find it on their website.

3. How long does it usually take for the visa to be issued?

TIA

There was a post here about travel from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur by train the other day. We more or less did the full length from Bangkok to Singapore (and back) a couple weeks ago as part of a "quick" visa run to Penang. This was my first tourist visa run since my stv ended and the embassy/consulate in Penang is back to business although noticed some changes since my last visit (it now takes 2-days for visa processing). Anyway, pulled together footage of the complete train journey for those thinking of similar. Penang is handy for visa runs from Bangkok (or hua hin etc.) without pre-booking flights, entry visas like in other countries etc. and the border restrictions are now relaxed for Malaysia asking only for proof of vaccinations and maybe an online pre-arrival thing (although we didn't do this on the return from Singapore). Otherwise the mysejahtera app and insurance etc. has been dropped. [members only]

Penang Report

I am in Penang to get a single entry Non-Im O based on retirement. I brought photocopies of

a) my bank book with 925,000 baht in it (they asked to see the actual bank book and fortunately I had it with me). My copies were 4 days old and that was no problem. most of the money in that account has only been in it for a few days - no problem;

b) photocopy of rental agreement

c) the usual passport photocopies (photo page and visa page)

But they also required a photocopy of my landlord's ID card, which I didn't have, so I was turned away. I went back the next day and I got through.

There is also a space for your Thai guarantor - I just used my landlord.

Agents: That guy Jim Tachinamurthy was abrupt and mostly unresponsive by FB messenger and gave me outdated info. Banana never bothered to answer my email.

So I did it myself.

Picked up a Non-O visa in Penang today. In addition to a rental agreement (housing) the agent asked for a photo copy of the landlords ID card signed. In and out in ten minutes. Picked up the stamped passport after 2:00 the following day. Thanks to Tod for having all of the necessary docs available to easily download.

Just a quick update.

Went to Penang to get my yearly NON-B visa but as my work permit is out of tune with my visa (only 4 months left) I only got a 3 months visa. I been out of sink for the last 4 years and it has never been a problem.

I was aware of this "new"? rule of having a minimum 8 months WP left to get a 1 year visa in Penang and tried to renew my work permit before I went but the labour office in Surat Thani was not happy to give me a new 1 year work permit as my old one was still valid for 4 months.

Well, that isn't really a big deal I thought. I just renew my work permit when it runs out, then get a new 1 year NON-B visa and I'm back in tune.

But, returning to Thailand, I spend 40 minutes in Don Muang (missing my connection flight) trying to explain the custom officer why I only have 3 months visa. He was absolute not happy, constantly asking me, for how long I will leave Thailand after my visa runs out. I told him I will renew my work permit when it runs out, then apply for a new visa. Still, he was not happy with that. So I told him I will go to Europe for 3 months holiday once my visa runs out and miracles do happen, he stamped my passport.

What a nonsense. Seams, one hand does not know what the other one does. Will see what happen in 3 months time ;-)

Hello everyone, I've been to the American embassy outrach in Patong, I had my income affidavit notarized as well as a copy of my passport. I also have the required amount of baht in a local bank and I've downloaded and filled out the application from the Thai embassy website. What other documents will be required by Thai immigration in Penang in order to convert a tourist visa into an O visa?
