Cost of visa prior to coming is around 1000 baht and either way, you have to go to an embassy or immigration. Your choice.

Get a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate/embassy before you come. That will give you 60 days so you won't have any issues.

I would be shocked if that border is open for 'border runs'. If you give it a go, report back.

Not every embassy/consulate has the same requirements for METV...check their website. If you can't get the METV, get the 60day Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV). The requirements are usually less. That should still give you time to find a school and get the paperwork to apply for the ed visa.

Get a 6 month multi-entry tourist visa from the embassy there first. Come to Thailand, explore and find a school. Then just before your tourist visa expires, pay the school the money, they give you the paperwork and you go to Laos or Malaysia and apply for an ed visa (2 days). Back to Thailand and start school.

Reminds me..... what happened with that American lady with the 6 month METV detained at Krabi. Did she ever get to come into the country or did she have to go back to the US?

Ummm... first time I think he has to go...but
@T**
would know best.

Unless you leave for Christmas (with re-entry permit). Then the 90 days restarts when he re-enters the country.

Side note... if he is in the country for 90 contiguous days he has to do a 90 day report with immigration. They didn't tell me that when I had my Ed visa and I managed to get fined. ;)

Supposed to be free BUT, you'll pay 500 baht for it for next day turnaround (at least in CM you do). You'll also need a photo, passport (and copies) and bring a lease if you have one. There is typically a little shop that will do all this for you at immigration for the usual fees ;).
