ORIGINAL POSTER
Question re. visa extensions after moving to a different province. I have a non-O based on retirement from Chiang mai immigration. Everyone says extensions always have to be done at the same immigration office. If I move to another province permanently, is there a way to "transfer" there? I know about the TM30 but from what I've heard, it doesn't matter in this scenario.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the process of transferring their non-O visa extension to a different province after moving. It is clarified that while visa extensions typically need to be processed at the original immigration office, a new TM30 must be filed with the new immigration office showing proof of residence. There is a question raised regarding the necessity of filing a TM28.

Does he have to file a TM28 in this instance?

Short answer or making you more confused ;p.

Name of TM30: NOTIFICATION FROM FOR HOUSE-MASTER, OWNER OR THE POSSESSOR OF THE RESIDENCE WHERE ALIEN HAS STAYED

Name of TM28: FORM FOR ALIENS TO NOTIFY THEIR CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR THEIR STAY IN THE PROVINCE FOR OVER 24 HOURS

Those forms' names and responsible persons are different.

Depends on the immigration office that serves his new province. Most don't, still several requires if you move permanently.

I still don't get very clearly what is the difference between TM30 and TM28. I thought TM28 had been scrapped in 2020. So, you still have to file TM30 and TM28? when and for what? Many thanks

My recollection about the TM28 is that it is something you file when you change residences. For example if you change condos or provinces. The TM30 is something every hotel is supposed to file when you stay there. For a while they expanded the TM30 enforcement to cover foreigners traveling to and from their same current residence. They backed off on that but you need to check for the details at each immigration office.

The TM30 tells the immigration office where you're staying. It must be filed no later then 24 business hours after you start staying the night in a different location. *SOME* immigration offices only want this file once you arrived in Thailand.

The TM28 tells the immigration office that you moved permanently to a new location. This must be filed after you moved. The large majority of immigration offices no longer want this filed.

*ASK* your local immigration office what their policies are for the TM30 and TM28.
