Can I Extend My Non-O Visa in Hua Hin After Obtaining It in Chiang Mai?

I will be attempting to convert a tourist visa to non-O visa based on retirement in Chiang Mai. My current entry is valid until Jan 31, 2020 (can be extended).

Assuming I get the visa, I will want to do the extension within the 90 days. However, I will be moving to Hua Hin for the burning season (Feb - May). Will I be able to extend my Non-O in Hua Hin without any issues or will I run into problems because it was issued in Chiang Mai? I could fly back to CM for the extension but unsure if they would be ok with that as my residence will be in Hua Hin at that time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is looking to convert a tourist visa to a Non-O visa based on retirement in Chiang Mai but plans to move to Hua Hin after obtaining the visa. They have questions about extending their Non-O visa in Hua Hin, even though it was issued in Chiang Mai. Comments suggest that visa extensions must typically be done in the province of residence, and there may be complications if trying to extend in a different location.

At the Chiang Mai immigration office in order to go from a 30 day visa exempt or 60 day tourist visa to a 90 day Non-O visa you need at least 21 days left on your current entry stamp (because it goes under consideration for that period of time before you go back and get the Non-O visa and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport). However when you do get that stamped inked in it will be back dated from the date you applied for the Non-O (so 21 days will be used already)

In Chiang Mai you can apply for a yearly extension when you have 45 days or less left on your current entry stamp. So once you get the Non-O visa inked into your passport you would have to wait an additional 24 days to apply for the yearly extension. (about 45 days from the date you originally applied for the 90 day Non-O visa). ;)

that's a month and a half from when you applied for the visa to when you can apply for the yearly extension.

AND you don't lose any days applying for the yearly extension as soon as you can because they ADD the year to the expiration date in your passport.

I had someone just recently denied on their yearly extension here in Bangkok because they got the Non-O in another immigration office and then tried to get their extension here in Bangkok. Even filing a change of address (TM28) and a 'foreigner in residence" (TM30), having the new lease, the land lords i/d and house book wasn't enough to sway C/W to issue the extension. They said you need to get the FIRST yearly extension from the office you get the 90 day Non-O visa from

(your mileage may vary :P )

Thanks Tod. This is why I asked. Seems simple and logical that someone could move within the country and then extend their visa but we know better than to apply logic.

Sooo, next question.

How long into the 90 days before I can apply for an extension?

Sorry to rain on your parade, BUT

I think you will NOT be able to get the 90 day Non-O visa from Chiang Mai and then apply for the first yearly extension from it in Hua Hin.

You either need to tough it out and get the 90 day Non-O AND then the first year in Chiang Mai OR you need to move and do it all down in Hua Hin (if they even issue 90 day Non-Imm visas at their main office).

You need to extend it in the province of your residential address. That's where you'll do 90 day reports as well, so you won't want to do it in Hua Hin

Thank you Troy...makes sense. As I'll be renting a condo in Hua Hin and have a TM30 filed there, that will be my address and I should be able to extend there...hopefully without too many headaches ;). Much appreciated.
