if you can get a tourist visa, you can most likely get a non-immigrant visa but always good to have a backup.

Its usually no big deal for your school to give you paperwork for another embassy

You're genuinely travelling which includes a border hop and you have a flight out afterwards, you should be fine. Just provide your itinerary to the embassy if they ask
