Is the following plan possible given the latest regulations? At what points will I need to provide proof of onward travel, and can I do that without booking any additional flights besides my final one? (I'm a US passport holder. I've always left Thailand within 30 days so never needed to deal with this stuff.)

End of Sep • apply for 60-day visa in Hanoi, having booked a flight out of Thailand on 19 Feb

24 Oct • arrive in CM from Danang with 60-day visa

21 Dec • do Mae Sai visa run by bicycle (as part of a Chiang Rai / Doi Angkhang loop)

[members only]

mid-January • get a 30-day extension at immigration

19 Feb • leave Thailand by air

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user plans to apply for a 60-day visa in Hanoi while holding a flight out of Thailand for February. Key considerations include proof of onward travel requirements when applying for the visa and during visa extensions. Comments suggest that proof may be needed for the initial visa application, but not for the extension or border run. The need for showing onward flights can vary by consulate and discretion of immigration officers.

You might need proof of onward travel when you buy the tourist visa (but that's totally dependent on what thai consulate you're using). You won't need it for your 30 day extension, or when you bounce out and back in at Mae Sai

Thanks. It sounds like the safest plan would be to buy a cheap bus ticket for sometime in December, before I go to apply for the visa.

I did not have to show onward flights. Is this country profile dependent?

Thailand is dependent on whether the immigration officer had his leg over the night before 😂😂

You're genuinely travelling which includes a border hop and you have a flight out afterwards, you should be fine. Just provide your itinerary to the embassy if they ask

Fake flights = Fraud, if you are found to be engaged in fraudulent activities on your visa application, you could find yourself in serious trouble and banned from using that embassy again.

Samuel Fila ohhhh, okay. Well, I had originally been looking at doing the a visa run by air in November (30 + 90) or December (60 + 60)—didn't think to book any random flight out of Thailand. Thanks

Samuel Fila Bus tickets work? Cool. There are no cheap RT flights from CNX this season—I have tried all sorts of dates and workable destinations (KUL/HKG/SIN).

What do people typically do if they already plan to extend their visa when applying or entering the country? AirAsia flights are no longer $20.
