What are the requirements for transitioning from an ED-VISA to a tourist visa in Thailand for language studies?

Hi,

I am studying a one-year Thai language programme in chiangmai from late May with ED-VISA. I extended the visa once and it will be expired by Nov. 7. But I feel the school schedule is quite slow and would like to enroll in another program in BKK. As I was told by the Uni in BKK, I need to cancel my EDVISA first, leave Thailand and reenter with a tourist visa. Then I go apply for another EDVISA in BKK with the dossiers provided by the uni. I am a Taiwanese citizen(Republic of China) and plan to go to Laos to apply for a tourist visa. Is there anyone having the similar experience as I? Is there any possibilities that my application for a tourist visa in Vientiane would be rejected? Many thanks!I

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is studying in Chiang Mai with an ED-VISA and wishes to switch to a different language program in Bangkok. They need to cancel their current visa, leave Thailand, and apply for a tourist visa in Laos before applying for a new ED-VISA. Other users provide insight into the visa application process, noting experiences with visa extensions and the challenges faced by various nationalities.

University ask you to come again on tourist visa but you cannot apply ed visa in Thailand if you are from any Nationality. some countries allowed to apply in neighbouring countries and some only can apply in their home countries as
@Robert ******
has shown the cou tries where they only can get non-immigrant visa in their home country only.

Really i didnt know that ! so she has to get tourist visa from china and they will change it to non-ed. thanks Robert Lagas for the information

The University can help with documentation to change from tourist visa to Non Immigrant ED visa at Immigration Office.

I had this similar situation when i was studying in thai language school and i found out that the if i get admission in any university then i can get year long visa no need to extent it every three months and no need police clearance certificate. the language school ask me police clearance from my home country and one more time to get police clearance certificate in Bangkok. My university asked me to get no objection certificate from my language school and they prepared document for me and i went to cheang wattana immigration with university offical and the immigration extented my visa for one more year. i dont why they ask you to cancel your visa and why they ask you to come on tourist visa ? University can make document for you before your visa expires and you go get non-ed from china as
@Robert ******
mentioned and come uo with new non -immigrant ed visa and can extent it after three months.

With a Chinese passport you will be denied. See picture

nope, canceling your current ED visa extension and then applying for a new 90 day ED visa will NOT impact you in the least.

People do it all the time

if you can get a tourist visa, you can most likely get a non-immigrant visa but always good to have a backup.

Its usually no big deal for your school to give you paperwork for another embassy

I think the list doesn't cover Taiwanese citizen since some of my fellows just apply for one in Laos. No matter if Taiwan is recognized as a country, in terms of visa application, it seems we've been seen as an independent country already haha. Anyway thank you guys and back to the subject, i think i will ask the uni whether i can apply for edvisa in laos. Thanks again!

@Tod ********
maybe? 😛
Robert *******
That is a good question. I don't know.

Does China on that list cover both PRC and ROC? They are different countries yet some countries don't recognize some of them as legitimate

If you do not have tourist visa for Thailand in your passport I don't see any problem to apply.

Sorry I didn’t make it clear. I am from Taiwan and I hold Taiwanese Passport. I am sure Taiwanese citizen can apply for a tourist visa in Laos. My concern is whether my visa cancellation history would have an impact on my tourist visa application. And if yes, can I just tell the officials that I need a tourist visa to apply another edvisa in bkk? Thank you.
