Open Thai Bank account

Back in the good old pre-digital everything days I've had bank accounts with Thai Farmer and Bangkok bank, both not a bother. Ì returned couple times last year after 6 years absence due to covid and subsequent price increases, met a sweetheart in March last year and we rented an apartment and spent 5 months together in total, returned Feb this year, got married in March, now I'm busted flat back in Blighty but no wukas I got some bikes to sell but it may be quite a while before I have the dinero to get back but never mind.

What I want to determine is when I come on the 90 Non 'O' and go to open a bank account which as yet ì haven't decided which one but Bangkok's out because they screwed me before, but what's all this shit about showing a Brit driver's license? I didn't renew back in February because of failing eyesight so don't ride/drive anymore, in Thailand I ride pillion on back of the Missus and fight a losing battle trying to educate her how to ride to live lol 😆

I do still keep my expired license just for ID but no way will be applying for a Thai one. Appreciate any info 👍

In May my wife and I will be going to Thailand for 7 weeks on a Non-Immigrant O Visa – we are 77 and from the United States. Unfortunately, we can not stay long enough to season our money in the bank since we are going to Africa to do a gorilla trek and our dates are set. Our goal on this trip is to set up bank accounts to deposit 800K into each account using wise. We have rented an Airbnb condo and have received from the owner the 7-week lease, her ID card, and her ownership of the condo document. In December we will return on a new Non-Immigrant O Visa and after two months apply for an extended stay permit for a year.

Our Problem: I am reading in Facebook that Kasikornbank (K-Bank) and other banks will not allow us to open bank accounts with that short a lease (even though we will have a TM30, Certificate of Residence, photos, and Thai phone numbers linked to our passports).

I see 3 possible outcomes:

1. Kasikornbank will allow us to open accounts.

2. We have to rent a cheap condo while we are gone for a year ($300/mo) just to have a lease.

3. Use an agent.

From your experience, will Kasikornbank allow us to open an account. Are some branches or cities better to use? If not, and we have to use an agent, what would the cost be using our own money and not the agent’s.

UPDATE to my post about Bangkok Bank locking account AGAIN:

When the branch in Jomtien called the Hua Hin branch (where I opened the account) they told them that I needed to bring in a new lease agreement.

So, I had just signed one for 12 months a couple days prior in Jomtien.

When I arrived at the Hua Hin Branch I was now informed, “yes, we need this, but it is not enough! We also need the property owners ID card,” which I didn’t have, because I wasn’t told!

This is the consistent type of incompetence I have personally dealt with from BKK Bank. Why they can’t seem to provide an entire list of the documents needed at one time, is beyond any reasonable question!

I have had enough with this bank so I closed my account and will replace it with a second account to my existing K Bank account! I have learned, the way banks operate here it’s best to have more than one account with enough money to survive for 3 to 4 weeks in each.

What banks OTHER than BKK Bank and K Bank do you recommend?

And have any of you with a K Bank account had your account locked with or without notice as many of us have had happen to to use with BKK Bank?

The point is, if you’re in the planning stages of living in Thailand, skip setting your account with BKK Bank. You WILL regret it!

Yes there are some who have been with BKK bank for many years and never had an issue. I’m happy for you. But those of us who have joined in the last few years are under way more scrutiny than others who have a longer history with the bank.

But to arbitrarily lock a person’s account, blocking their access to their own money , WITHOUT so much of a call or email to say, “hey, we need this document, please bring it to a branch near you by blank date,” is beyond comprehension, and horrific business practice.

Good luck! Welcome to Thailand!

Hi, in relation to opening a bank account with a Non O visa, is a TM30 sufficient or do you actually require a certificate of residence from immigration for the bank?

Just want to know if any expats from the UK use Wise and if they do, do they have trouble with the money coming instantly or do they usually have to wait for a few hours or even the next day?

Hi everyone. I searched the group and have a question. I have a retirement visa and want to open a bank account with kasikorn bank. I went to the minburi branch twice and they wanted my ssn card, tm30, passport and US ID. They are saying I need a book for where I’m living with my girlfriend that includes me in the document.

I know sometimes the requirements are branch dependent.

Has any opened an account with Kasikorn bank recently and which branch in Bangkok.

Many thanks

Hello, everyone. I hear that Kasikorn Bank at Div. 1 in Bangkok has closed the location there. In the past when renewing my Non-Immigrant O extension I had the bank there take care of the required documents (copy of passbook activity, verification of account ownership, proof of transfer of funds from a foreign account). Has anyone found a reliable K Bank branch near Div. 1 to provide the documents? When I used my local K bank before for this they were utterly confused on what to provide and gave me the wrong paperwork causing me a second trip for my renewal. Thank you all.
