Can someone explain to me how I change my 800k THB back to GBP and send it out of Thailand? Kasikorn Bank doesn’t have a foreign currency section ( we had some GBP in cash but had to change it to THB before putting it into our bank accounts). We are leaving next month, how do I get my money back? I know I can use Wise to transfer money into my Kasikorn bank but they do not accept the transfer the other way. SWIFT is finished I know that too. I do not want to take 36k back to the UK in cash.

Th is to everyone who’s tried to help.

ADDENDUM - In the end the K+ staff told me I had to go to my Kasikorn Branch (only there) and that the branch would arrange the transfer. Of course when I got to the bank they said “no, you must use K+ and rang them for me to speak again. The K+ man tried to walk me through their app but I was right, the App would not allow me ( a foreigner) to send this money. Then he said the only way I could get my money sent to gbp UK account was if I could prove how I brought it in. Fortunately I had brought a printout directly from my bank for visa purposes. NOTE: they will not accept any online printout from Wise or the UK account, it had to be manually printed by the bank. He tried to say I needed a more recent printout but when I accused him ( loudly) of trying to steal my money and asked him if he expected me to fly to the UK, get a printout from my bank and fly back to Thailand he gave in and very quickly we filled out a form and literally by the end of that same day, the money was in my UK account. So, make sure you have this information with you and know that you cannot deal with any branch, just the one where you opened the account.
Answer summary
The user sought advice on transferring 800,000 THB back to GBP as they prepared to leave Thailand. They primarily faced issues with Kasikorn Bank, which lacked a foreign currency section and had complications with mobile app transfers, especially for foreigners. Comments indicated that while SWIFT transfers and services like Wise and Western Union were considered, evidence of the funds' origin was crucial. Ultimately, the user succeeded after proving the legitimacy of their funds at the bank, highlighting the importance of accurate documentation and the right banking channels for expatriates. Various other methods were suggested by community members, including using the DeeMoney app and seeking alternative banks.

Go to the head office of krungsri bank on rama 3 road. They have millions in USD, GBP and EUR there upstairs on the 2nd or 3rd floor. You could also open an account there and wire it. I think the fee is 500 or 600 Baht.

take the cash out of your account, go to Bangkok and visit Siam Exchange or the Superrich headquarter. Order GBP Pound Sterling, maybe they can exchange on the same day. You can take out of Thailand cash foreign currency, you just need to declare it. You could also do a direct SWIFT transfer from your Thai bank account to your UK account, but the exchange rate would not be as good as cash with Superrich

you are going to lose badly on exchange, but either withdraw cash and exchange or send via Swift transfer. This is one more reason why people use agents. Putting 800k in a Thai bank is just financially stupid

Todd McGowan ok put your statement on record here, tell everyone that it is legal to have an agent temporarily put the 800k baht in your account, and bribe an immigration officer to turn a blind eye to its removal.
Todd *********
Todd *********
Ian Whyte ‘abusing’ lol. Get that 💩 outta here. And look at you, the typical ignorant farang, here to tell long standing Thai citizens working hard as agents and Thai immigration officials that what they are doing is illegal…. Smart.
Ian *******
Ian *******
Todd McGowan abusing people because they prefer to follow the rules and not illegally get their visa, is a pathetic response to a valid statement. Just because the Thai government are turning a blind eye to the illegal activities, and the bribing of the immigration officers, does not make it legal. It also does not mean they will not clamp down on the illegal practice in the future.

Paul ******

Todd McGowan l stand corrected and you're right that banking regulations and immigration regulations are separate systems. However, saying they are "in no way related" isn't correct either.

Thai banks have tightened their checks on foreigners primarily because of fraud, money laundering and mule accounts, not because Immigration ordered banks to enforce retirement visas. But a foreigner's visa/immigration status and supporting documentation can form part of a bank's KYC checks.

And for a retirement extension using the ฿800,000 method, Immigration obviously relies on the applicant's Thai bank account and banking evidence to establish that the financial requirement has genuinely been met.

So I should have said the recent bank-account crackdown is not caused by the ฿800,000 immigration rule, but banking and immigration certainly intersect when foreigners use Thai bank deposits to meet visa-extension requirements. 🙏🏼
