Visa exempt entry is not a solution for long term stay in Thailand. It would seem an O or OA visa with appropriate extensions of stay and reentry permits are for you. You could enter visa exempt to apply for the O visa inside Thailand.

Why was my Non-O visa issued as a single entry with only 3 months validity instead of the usual 1 year multiple entry?

Or apply for a retirement visa and subsequent 1 year extension of stay whilst in Thailand and purchase a multi reentry permit to go with it.
