It's always busy over 700 when we were there last week. They do move the lines quickly. Not the Consulate staff but the mini van drivers who actually do a great job of moving people through. Time is money. They even wear shirts saying staff. LOL! Why the rush we enjoy staying for 5 to 7 days. Border can be extremely long and busy. PM me and I will tell you how to get across quickly because you're Canadian. Canadian passport is more expensive for the Laos visa. Don't know why.
Just before the border keep left and left into the market slowly you will see a lane on your right. Good place, park my truck there many times. I've also parked on the street for a few days never had a problem. If it's just for the day park on the main road as close to the border as possible.
My experiences are you can stay for 14 days or you stay for the day or turn around and go straight back to Thailand. You tell them what you're doing. I've never had a problem doing any of those choices. So unless something has suddenly changed I don't understand the confusion.
If you've been before you know the routine. Go to the consulate in Edmonton and they only want to see your ticket to Thailand. No return needed. Easy to obtain a 60 day SETV. Probably the easiest place in the world. Extend in Thailand for another 30 day. Airline will ask for return ticket maybe but the visa is their protection. You state you will be traveling overland after your visa expires. That's the simplest, or just show up with a return ticket and get 30 days visa exemption stamp. Shouldn't have a problem but nothing is guaranteed in this world.
Tod Daniels and Robert Lagas are the people to listen too. Others mostly are full of incorrect information. Why they comment is beyond my understanding. Go in advance!
