I need to be in Kuala Lumpur end of the month and that's exactly when my first visa run is due. Should I do the new SETV in KL or head over to Penang? Have been reading mixed reviews about the KL Thai consulate.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering whether to get their new Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) in Kuala Lumpur or Penang, as they need to be in Kuala Lumpur at the end of the month. The discussion highlights mixed reviews about the Thai consulate in Kuala Lumpur and mentions issues in Penang, including recent flooding and a limit on daily visas (200 per day). There are suggestions to use a visa agent in Penang, specifically Jim Tachinamurthy, who can assist with the application. The conversation also touches on various requirements for obtaining the visa, like financial proof and necessary documentation, and notes that the consulate in Kuala Lumpur has a structured checklist to ensure all documents are in order.

To everyone else, I would avoid Penang right now. Have you seen the news? I left there and 7 days later they had super FLOODS. Penang streets were undriveable.

I have seen the floods in Penang and have followed the situation there, was rough storm with heavy rain though, I've checked the weather forecast for my stay and seems ok. And yes Richard Doodson, I'm very grateful for all your responses πŸ‘

Seems KL is a no hassle place if you play by the rules and since i have to be there anyway for other matters, i can save the trip to Penang for another time.

The Thai Embassy site KL and consulate site Penang don't mention any financial requirements for a SETV, it's only required for a METV. Don't know if they will require it extra...

Contact him before you go and he'll run you through what you need. I'm sure Penang is the 3 requirements though. 20k in a bank account, flight out of Thailand and an accomodation booking.

KL wants you to use a checklist, benefit is you now all is in order before you hand in your papers. Do not know where you from, but South Africa is not listed on the list of countries with resident requirements but is treated the same. This link to this list is just above the Tourist Visa Checklist link.
