Correct, there is a 60 day "Visit Thai Family" extension but some Immigration Offices will not issue this on a Visa Exempt or Tourist Visa entry stamp so the OP needs to visit Immigration to see if it's possible

The law requires you to report every 90 days or pay a 2000B fine, your choice.

Not wrong. Many people on 12 month extensions never do 90 day reports and just pay the 2000B every year with their new extension fee of 1900B.
