Good evening. I have a question on a weird experience I just had at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. I was informed by the check-in agent, for the flight i was taking out of country, that i would have to pay immigration 20K Thai Baht because of my previous time in the country and my plans to return. The check-in agent also took a picture of me with their personal cell phone while she was talking to me about this.
Is this normal and is this legal (see below for the background on my travel)
Background: I was asked multiple questions about my passport, visa’s and future travel plans to Thailand by the check-in agent for the flight I was taking out of country.
1) I was on a 90D Non-Immigrant O visa
2) Left country with my Thai wife on the 90th day to another country for 4 days via flight.
3) Returned to Thailand and received a 60D Tourist Visa
4) Leaving country on my 60th day to another country for 4 days.
- The ticket agent asked if I was returning to Thailand, which they should have been able to see in the system that I had a round trip ticket. I answered “Yes”.
- I also informed them that I had a return trip to my country already purchased for 60 Days after I return to Thailand from our 4 day holiday.
At this point i was informed i would have to be interviewed by immigration upon my return which is normal (No issues here).
But then informed i would have to pay 20,000 Thai Baht to immigration when i returned because of time i had already spent in Thailand. The check in agent also took my picture with her cell phone (This is where my Spidey senses started sparking and wanted to reach out for any thoughts, similar experiences, or recommendations).
I will arrive at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday evening. I have a connecting flight on Tuesday morning, so I'll be staying overnight (one night) at a nearby hotel.
Do I need to have 20,000 baht with me when I go through immigration?
So I saw a discussion on another group about cash on hand to be able to enter Thailand. I thought I knew the answer to this but a google search provided many contradicting answers so I ran here to where the facts live 😊
For a visa exemption is it 10000 thb or equivalent?
If you are entering Thailand with a visa exemption from Aus as a tourist do you need to provide proof of $$$ or just accommodation and onward flight? Wasn't sure if I needed to bring cash with me? Thank you. 🙏
First time going to Thailand with an Italian passport. Do i understand correctly that i won't need any visa or other documents (I have a covid vaccine) for entry? I am planning to stay one month, then leave for another month (to vietnam or Cambodia, possibly by land), then come back for 1-2 months.
thanks everyone. As the back and forth below in the comments points out, I had trouble finding the right answer. (Apparently I’m not alone!) I’ve got it now. Thanks!

I’m staying for less than 30 days and I keep hearing conflicting info. Will I need to present proof of income or have a certain amount of cash in my bank account? Or is that requirement for someone staying longer? I’ve googled for the answer and I’m just not sure which website is the most accurate and up to date.
Hello everyone, I'm heading out of the country for a few days, I have a retirement extension, do I still need to have 20K baht in cash when I come back into Thailand?
I’ve visited Thailand 3 times this year on tourist visa I got each time when I arrived at Suvarnibuhmi. I am going to Thailand again in 2 weeks for a 17 day stays. Each of the previous visits were for about 17 days. Would they have any reason to refuse my entry into the country?
