Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding entry requirements for Thailand.

My wife and son will be traveling from Vietnam to Thailand soon. Do they need to carry 10,000 THB in cash per person as proof of funds ("show money"), or is it acceptable to show a credit card, bank balance, or other financial proof instead?

If anyone has traveled recently from Vietnam to Thailand or has firsthand experience, I'd really appreciate your advice.

Thank you!
Answer summary
Travelers from Vietnam to Thailand need to be aware of the cash requirements upon entry. While the formal rule states that travelers should carry 20,000 THB in cash per adult, actual experiences vary significantly. Many users report that they have entered Thailand multiple times without ever being asked for this proof of funds. However, it's noted that if immigration officers are inclined to scrutinize a traveler, they may require either cash or other forms of financial proof, although cash is often preferred.

Immigration only ask to see this money If they are looking to refuse you entry. For ordinary genuine tourists that don't look like Bohemian Beach dwellers, you would never be asked.

Wannikea Wanblee Depends on the port of entry and nationality. Chinese travelers arriving by land may be asked to show proof of funds even if it's their first entry to Thailand. The key word being "may" not "will".

It's for any entry by a non Thai. In any currency. Think just for the adult.

You will get very conflicting answers. As I understand it, there is a formal requirement to carry cash (I think even countervalue of 20 000 baht per person). In reality, no "real tourist" will be asked. And should that happen, it is up to the immigration officer to decide which proof of sufficient funds will be accepted.

Most people will tell you, that they entered X times and were never checked. Neither have we. We never carry any cash... It is 2026 🤷

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson no "real tourist" They are asking now!! and many are falling short, if people have not heard, they are cracking down hard currently. Bad advise to assume things are and will continue to be as it once was.

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson The rules for entry are 20k cash or equivalent amount. This is a requirement for real tourists. You cannot use the atm as it's after immigration and apps and paper statements not accepted. People especially this year are asked to show the funds and people are been denied entry.

traveling all the way and money spent on flights, why risk it? It's a rule not a suggestion.

Paul Jones It is a rule, but there are "normal people" who decide to let you in. Or not. They have no interest in stopping normal tourists, unless they suspect some kind of "dirty business" going on. So if you don't have cash, they won't send you away, unless there are other reasons.

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson Here's a novel idea, follow the rules and have no issues. You are required to carry 20k cash as a tourist. What you think is irrelevant if you get stopped and denied entry.

20k cash per person or 40k family. Cash is best option as IO will oftern refuse bank apps and paper statements.

Paul Jones Any proof of the "often refuse bank apps and paper statements"? I mean - why on earth would they do that?

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson to easy to fake printouts and webpages. Harder to fake cold hard cash.

Lars-Göran Ingvarsson As above, its specified in the regulations. Yes it's 2026 and yes everyone is digital.

Has been a lot of report on various sites of all sorts of reasons.

Paper may be out of date of photoshopped

You may not have access etc etc.

Paul Jones Cash isn't the best option, It's the only option specified in the regulation.

The requirement is 20k cash per adult (any major currency) so not having it when asked can result in denied entry
