Advice needed about money from UK to Thailand. My daughter has recently moved to Thailand and is getting her Ed visa sorted. I'll be visiting her and sending her money, we both have wise cards (as yet unused). It suggests you can 'spend like a local' but I can't see how that works when she says they don't have contactless anywhere, also she doesn't know how to transfer her rent using Wise. She's always paid in cash and has to withdraw cash weekly. Is this how it is locally??

She's been taking money out of her uk bank at ATMs and being charged fees both ends. She tried to get cash using her passport in a bank to avoid atm fees but they refused.

I guess what I'm asking is what's the best way to use the wise card, she has a physical one and digital one, with different numbers (not sure why she has two?). It may be that I'm a dinosaur, but advice would be much appreciated.

Edit, I’ve had lots of feedback on this, and nobody recommended AMEX.

However, I’ve done a bit more research? And for a platinum Amex I will get a refund ( in airports $) of the full 12 month card fee, plus a few airport lounge passes, and free travel insurance, (for up to 180 days, there is some small print on this and I can’t speak to this insurer till next week). The Mastercard has 120 free days insurance. And a ‘priority pass’ lounge membership but I think I still have to pay $35usd to use the lounge.(not interested in that).

Also, a lot of people suggested wise, (i already applied for a card). But i am not sure how best to use this to its full potential. I might be going to other countries, yet tbc.

TIA for any feedback & advice

Amex or Mastercard.

I am considering getting a credit card to put my overseas travel on. They both offer free travel insurance and air points ( from New Zealand).

The Amex has better rewards, but I am unsure if it would be as useful to me as the Mastercard. ( I seem to recall that Amex charges the retailer more, so some won’t accept Amex).

Alsobthe mastercard has free overseas ATM withdrawals ( but high cash advance fees). Has anyone been able to havk the system, overpay their balance so its in credit, and get free cash withdrawal overseas?

Does anyone have feedback?

Hello everyone 🙏🏻

I have a question about how much cash I should bring. I was reading in another expat page (Italian) where it was strongly advised to bring a lot of cash that can then be exchanged on site. However, I have a Wise card on which I have been told I can add Thai currency. So, my question is for those of you who don’t have a Thai account, what do you suggest? I plan on staying in Thailand from December through May. Should I bring cash and then exchange it as I need it or just use the Wise card at the ATM?

Thanks ahead of time for the advice.

Wise (aka Transfer Wise) sent me a "Wise card." What exactly is it good for? I thought Wise was *only* for transferring funds. 🤔

Hi, I already use Wise to transfer money from the UK but am retiring to Ubon in January. What are the benefits of, and is it worth getting, the Wise card instead of ad-hoc transfers? Thanks and stay safe

Wise multi currency card - just received an email that this product is finally available to Canadians. I love Wise - I use for transfers to Thailand, saves me bringing wads of cash or incurring big ATM fees. Just wondering how useful this card would be?
