Edit, I’ve had lots of feedback on this, and nobody recommended AMEX.

However, I’ve done a bit more research? And for a platinum Amex I will get a refund ( in airports $) of the full 12 month card fee, plus a few airport lounge passes, and free travel insurance, (for up to 180 days, there is some small print on this and I can’t speak to this insurer till next week). The Mastercard has 120 free days insurance. And a ‘priority pass’ lounge membership but I think I still have to pay $35usd to use the lounge.(not interested in that).

Also, a lot of people suggested wise, (i already applied for a card). But i am not sure how best to use this to its full potential. I might be going to other countries, yet tbc.

TIA for any feedback & advice

Amex or Mastercard.

I am considering getting a credit card to put my overseas travel on. They both offer free travel insurance and air points ( from New Zealand).

The Amex has better rewards, but I am unsure if it would be as useful to me as the Mastercard. ( I seem to recall that Amex charges the retailer more, so some won’t accept Amex).

Alsobthe mastercard has free overseas ATM withdrawals ( but high cash advance fees). Has anyone been able to havk the system, overpay their balance so its in credit, and get free cash withdrawal overseas?

Does anyone have feedback?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is considering whether to get an American Express (Amex) or Mastercard for overseas travel expenses, highlighting the pros and cons of both cards regarding travel insurance, acceptance in Thailand, and ATM withdrawal fees. Community feedback primarily suggests that Mastercard is more widely accepted in Thailand compared to Amex, which many users find is not accepted at numerous local businesses. Users recommend using cash as the primary payment method and suggest looking into a Wise account for lower exchange fees and better overall value in terms of ATM withdrawals.

off point but a funny story -- the US forces first "use this" government travel card was Diner's Club. Made sense to someone with DC Points who saw their advertisements I suppose. Jumped through hoops "mandating" use of the MF'ing (mil speak) card for travel expenses or else risk non-reimbursement -- come to find out the on-post billeting offices around europe and asia did not accept Diner's Club. One million establishments world-wide except where where Uncle Sam's Airlines flew most.

You're missing one important detail. If most places do not accept amex you don't get any points, or cash back, and for those places that do accept them is the average 3% extra charge more than what you get cash back.

@Kool ******
To get cash back you have to spend a lot for points.

If your objective is spending a great deal of money to get points, and eventually some cash back, get a financial advisor.

But Advisors don't take AMEX because of the xtra 3% they are charged.

Amex is completely out. Visa or MC. Or try to get a Wise CC.

wise do a credit card?

I just ordered a wise card. But it’s not a credit card
Steve **********
@Barney ******
if not a credit card, what is it ?

Wise is for money transfer here in Thailand .

They have a paid agreement with Visa and MC for 'debit only', so I guess you're paying two fees to use your own money.
Steve **********
@Ralph ***********
noone accepts Wise CC, it's used to transfer funds.

Wise is like Union pay CC, noone accepts.
Steve **********
Alex charges higher fee than V/MC, and payment to vendor is slow.

Many places have signs, ' if using AMEX a 2% fee added '
Rok ********
None. A card with 0% transaction fees and cash withdrawal fees.
Steve **********
Most retailers don't want AMEX. as they charge more. And payment is delayed.

Mastercard or Visa much better...avoid the Chinese Union card
Andy ********
Of the 2 definitely Mastercard

MC hands down

CapitalOne ATM and travel charge cards allow you to charge in US dollars or local currencies. If I charge something here, clerk will ask me if I want to charge in dollars or Baht.
Steve **********
@James ******
where ? Who in Thailsnd makes change. Or charge in US dollars.

20 years, haven't see as US currency bill.

The OP was asking with reference to NZ cards. Doubt they have access to Charles Schwab banks or cards.

good point

Most places still take cash but many now want you to pay with the new QR code and in some places it is the only way to pay. Credit cards are used less n less now

MC all day. Despite Amex being accepted in 190 countries not so much in Thailand.
John-Paul ******
Visa or M/C not Amex. Not always accepted. Be sure to get a card that does not charge for international transactions.

Free travel insurance is usually a gimmick. With my card, the first 5 days are free if you are under 60. If over 60 it's 2 days free. Then of course to get the free days you need to take out a policy for the duration of your trip.

Think about the name AMERICAN Express. It’s not widely used outside the U.S.. Big chains of hotels and restaurants (and maybe places like H&M, Chanel, etc.) might, but otherwise…not so much.
John-Paul ******
@Ruth ******
that is BS. In Thailand outside of BKK or perhaps CM Amex is not readily accepted though. On that point you are right at least.
Neil ******
@Ruth ******
it’s very widely used outside of the U.S. Not in TH though.

@Neil *****
I would not say “widely”.

Most ATM machines in Thailand charge a fee regardless of which card you use. Is the card issuer offering rebates on fees charged or just no added fees ? I'm not aware of having seen AMEX accepted at businesses outside Bangkok (maybe at large hotels they will accept but not at local businesses)
Neil ********
Amex not useful.

Open a wise account and secure the card before leaving. You will be charged 200 baht for each ATM withdrawal so most take out
*****
baht each time to keep charges down. 90% plus transactions cash here.

Wise is a multiple currency account and has low exchange fees so each to swap around your base currency
Galenus ******
Pay by phone is the best option! Credit cards are not much used here. Most bad is Amex!
Tracey **********
Amex very rarely accepted
Tony *********
Cash Is King . Only use card as a back up but not Amex as it's not widely accepted here ..
Jo **********
@Tony ********
no that was many years ago. Some places are going to cards only or scan and pay
Stuart *********
Amex not so widely accepted. M/C much more so, but cash is still king.
Aake **********
M/C are the best

@Stuart ********
Scan is the King

Only if you have a Thai bank account. Most tourists don’t.
