TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses financial options for expats applying for a DTV visa in Thailand, specifically addressing the inability to open a Thai bank account. Users suggest various prepaid card options like TagThai, Revolut, and Wise Card, which can be topped up and used for transactions, primarily through QR code payments. Alternatives such as cash and Western Union are also mentioned for those not planning to utilize ATMs.
Be careful and don't let anyone regardless if it is here or on the streets scam you a lot of your stuff might have to be taken care of in your country of origin. Because if you get your money taken and you come here and complain about it everyone's just going to call you stupid and then talk about responsibility when they don't know a single thing about it since most of them were most likely born with a silver spoon in their mouth also there's a lot of carpet bagging going on in Thailand right now if you're a US citizen you're not going to have a lot of luck. Make sure you have your stuff situated before you go there nothing makes them angrier if they can't get anything on you. Other than that Thailand is probably the cleaner Southeastern Asian countries and probably the more advanced one enjoy your time there. I've had more help out of Thai people there than other foreigners other foreigners tend to just look at you and then complain when you have something to say about anything. Good luck enjoy your time and I hope you have a wonderful life there there's nothing like a good old delicious Bowl of sweet and spicy massaman chicken curry.

Use the ATM. I find them convenient and safe. Plus my bank has no foreign fee costs. Like home except in baht.

But the bank told me you can only top up TagTgai with foreign currency. You can't deposit bhat into it. When I opened mine they also told me after one year the account is closed automatically. So does your balance just evaporate? Things were hectic at the airport when I opened it but I need to learn a little more.

Use TagThai. Top-up at KASIKORNBANK foreign exchange booth: 100,000 Baht/transaction.

Many normal credit cards can work in Thailand … I am using mine approximately for all purchases in decent shops

Here's an option that no one ever mentions but it's actually good if you transfer enough money. Western Union cash pick up.
If you transfer more than about 110,000 baht you get almost the same as the market rate. With the fee and the exchange rate it only ends up being about 700 baht less money you get than using wise with a bank to bank transfer. Its not too bad for that amount of money
I have a rental apartment in Pattaya for ten years and spend 2 months a year here and usually bring cash. Now I’m staying for 6 months so need another method as you can’t get a bank account on a dtv visa and a bank closed my last one during covid
May I ask why they closed your account? They would only do that if your account was empty and inactive. That's a rookie mistake. You always keep a few thousand baht in your bank account.
I did have money in the account. I’ve been coming to thailand for 30 years so not a rookie but during covid they shut my and others I know accounts and didn’t refund any of us. Their pov accounts hadn’t been used for 2 years. We all explained we had been in Europe on lockdown but they said their decision was final. So I won’t be going back to them anytime soon. With what they are doing atm re accounts it’s proven us all right

Open a Revolut account. Top the card up as required and use at ATM. Exchange rate is forex rate but you get charged B250 at atm

You can use TagThai. This is a prepaid card that you can use almost anywhere. It uses the QR code of the business. Downside is you’re got to top it up with cash.
You do yourself or agent, if you use agent they should tell you what you can do

You can use an app like tagthai that allows you to add money to a card less acct and do the QR scanning that’s readily available all over Thailand from street stalls to high end shops
Good luck
