crazy how quickly things change in that case! I was there a couple nights, no visa fee and paid an agent 350 baht... got it next day. That was about 10 months ago
If you are going to the Malaysian border, it might be worth thinking about going a little further to Penang and getting the 60 tourist visa, can extend a month at immigration within Thailand. 3 months without having to leave the country. Once you get to the border its only a little bit further to Penang and it bags you an extra month.
