TLDR : Answer Summary
UK citizens cannot obtain a visa on arrival in Thailand. Instead, they receive a 30-day visa exempt entry upon arrival, which can be extended for an additional 30 days at an immigration office for a fee. To stay longer, a proper tourist visa must be obtained beforehand from a Thai consulate.
okay I can see by the O/P's replies that they know these facts;
-they as a UK citizen do not qualify for ANY visa on arrival because those are sold to people from 21 countries for 2000baht and good for only 15 days.
-they know about the 30 day visa exempt entry they get and the ability to extend it by another 30 days at the immigration office for 1900baht
-they know NOW that if they want any visa for thailand they need to buy it at the thai consulate before washing up here.
you dont have to visit the embassy you can do it by registered post. If yo do visit in person it is a two trip job one day fordrop off next for pick up.

If your intended stay is less than 30 days, just go visa exempt for free. Although your airline may ask for proof of onward travel within that time period.

Visa Exemption (a.k.a. visa free, visa waiver) and Visa on Arrival are mutually exclusive. You get one or the other depending on nationality (see the map) or get a Tourist Visa in advance from Thai embassy / consulate.

I am perfectly aware of the difference between a visa and an visa exempt permision to stay stamp.. thanks anyway.
The visa exempt stamp (the thing you thought was a visa on arrival) means you show up, they say welcome for 30 days, and pay nothing. You can extend it an additional 30 days for 1900thb in the Kingdom, but no matter what you will have to get a proper visa outside the country if you want to stay longer.

Not sure yet. Could be a month could be a year.. so i am aware that i will have to change my visa again later if i choose to stay.

You could get a single entry tourist visa in the uk. That will give you 60 days in Thailand which you can extend here to get another 30days. Uk passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival, only a 30 day visa exempt stamp at immigration.

It would be ideal for me if it was possible. Unfortunately it’s not.

You can’t get a visa on arrival if your from the U.K. As Robert Lagas already said....
You need to go to a Consulate and get a tourist visa BEFORE you fly
Danny **********
It doesn't exist! The 'visa on arrival' is only for countries that cannot enter on visa exempt.

If you want a tourist visa, get it in the uk before you arrive. Can't get a 60 day tourist visa on arrival.

Only listed countries need Visa on Arrival. You wil get the Visa Exempt Entry, good for 30 days. Immigration is allowed to ask for 10K Thb Cash or same amount in other currency, proof of accommodation and flight onward within 30 days, but these question are rarely asked unless full passport with entry and exit stamps of Thailand. You will get the stamp at the Immigration Check point at the Airport.

You are given a visa exempt form to fill in on the plane , don’t need a visa as visa exempt for 30 days
