My friend has a question...
He currently has an ED visa that expires in April but he finishes studying in December. The school have told him he has to cancel his visa by the end of December. He is thinking of just going out of the country and getting a non-O (he is eligible)... does he have to cancel the ED visa to get the non-O, or can he just leave? My guess is he has to cancel otherwise he would have an active visa while applying for another?
TLDR : Answer Summary
A user asked if their friend, who has an ED visa expiring in April but finishes studying in December, needs to cancel their ED visa before applying for a Non-O visa after leaving the country. Comments clarified that since the friend is on an Extension of Stay rather than a traditional visa, it is mandatory to cancel the current extension before applying for a new visa. One suggestion included taking a termination letter from the school to the immigration office to complete the cancellation process.
