@Mick ******
yes I realise it's thata bit 'hit and miss', but if he does it early enough, he has time to go in to the office if rejected.

Do it online.

I did mine yesterday and it was approved today (10 days before the due date). It only takes a couple of minutes.

@Gerald *******
I think the window is 15 days before the due date to 7 days before. I usually do mine about 10 days before, just in case it's rejected.

This seems like they are advising you about applying for a marriage visa. Have you asked them for their list of requirements for the non o retirement visa.

It's usually very straightforward with no agent required.

you also need to pay a couple of hundred at the bank as well, if I remember correctly.

ouch!

I was lucky, I opened my account about 3 years ago, when it was still possible to open an account on a tourist visa, without using an agent.

You will probably need to use an agent for this, I believe it costs about 5,000 baht.

It's probably the only time you need to use an agent as everything else is really easy.

I wish I had known that before I came to Thailand George. My mistake.

I have always used Wise, but your post made me thing at a bit of a tangent.

If you used your home bank account to transfer via Swift for a large sum, would that alert them to the fact you have moved to Thailand (I ask because banks sometimes close accounts if they realise you are living abroad).

Using Wise is more 'discreet' imo, even if it costs a few Baht more.
