Is anyone else unable to open or even keep a normal Thai bank account? (Well, don’t all answer at once!)
My Bangkok Bank account (opened legally in 2022) is currently frozen due to a SIM update issue, and I was informed that after standard KYC it may be permanently closed solely because I hold a DTV visa without a work permit.
Before anyone suggests Wise, Revolut or other workarounds – that is not the point!
I am not looking for hacks. I want to function as a NORMAL person with a local Thai bank account in the country where I legally live and spend my own money!
Forcing legal long-stay residents into cash-only or fintech-only solutions contradicts AML goals and personal safety.
I have filed a complaint with the Bank of Thailand.
If you experience the same issue, please comment or submit your complaint too – nothing changes unless enough of us speak up.
EDIT: The only thing that has any real effect is filing formal complaints, not arguing online.
For anyone interested, here are the official contacts:
Bank of Thailand – Consumer Protection:
contact@bot.or.th
Tourism Authority of Thailand
tatcontact@tat.or.th
You can add your embassy in copy.
You submit your complaint directly there, attach a brief explanation of the issue. Public pressure only works when combined with official action — individual silence or arguing online changes nothing.
Any updates on Bangkok Bank? Anyone successfully get their account unfrozen? I’m still dumbfounded, it’s almost been a month and ZERO updates. No one’s talking about it, no official statement from the bank, this is insanity.
Are they allowing you to close the account and withdrawal your money? What are the options here because this is getting ridiculous
I have friends that are moving to Thailand and are wanting to get on the DTV Visa, most likely under the digital nomad category. Has anyone successfully opened a bank account? Is there an agency that is able to help them open an account? Husband and wife would both like bank accounts! Thanks for any help and sorry if this has been answered multiple times!
How have people managed to get a post paid sim registered to their name? True move told me I need a work permit, which I think might be BS. Bangkok bank didn’t warn me before deleting my accounts yesterday just as I was trying to pay for something 😜
I know there are a few threads on this but has anyone had any luck opening a bank account in Bangkok on a DTV visa? I’ve tried every chain in different locations but no luck as yet. Have heard some places do accept it though. Thanks!
I have come back to the UK for a few months but still use my Thai bank account to pay bills.
I hear that there is a new check that your bank account and phone connected to the account matches to the same ID. Bank account in my name and passport but phone was originally set up by my GF ID and have never changed it.
Is there an impact on using the bank app with my phone in another’s name?
My bank card expires soon went to K Bank to renew today.
No she said you have a new passport. She needed my old passport as numbers are different to what you opened the account with. Go job I kept old passport. The banks aren't up to date with new uk passport. After further hour she finally clicked on UK passport she was trying to enter GBR ,in the end got it done ,keep your old passport for this.
