Hi all, I’ve had my Bangkok Bank account for over 5 years but my card has just expired and I need to go in branch to get a new one.

When I originally opened the account I was on a student visa. I’m now on a DTV and I know technically you can’t open a new account on this visa type, but this is just a card renewal on an existing account.

Has anyone been through something similar? Did the bank ask any questions about your visa, or did it go smoothly?
Answer summary
The user inquired about renewing their Bangkok Bank card after switching from a student visa to a DTV visa and whether the bank would question their visa status during the renewal process. Community members shared their experiences, stating that many were able to renew their cards without issues despite being on a DTV visa. They also mentioned alternative methods like cardless withdrawals via the bank app, which could be used to avoid in-person contact.

Same thing happened to me. I didn't bother to get a new card, just in case. I just use cardless withdrawals via the phone app.

Oh my god. White men first world problems. Oh, you are a woman ...

You have a bank account already? What has opening a new bank account to do with getting a new debit/atm card for your existing bank account?

Just be there in time, or make sure they know your address and they mail it to you: just liek any other bank in the world!!!

I have a Bangkok Bank account from a work visa which was opened 10 years ago.

I went in last year to set up online banking and get a debit card. They wanted an updated phone number and they scanned my new visa but otherwise things were fine.

I’ve been on the DTV since October 2024.

From why I see anecdotally, they aren’t canceling Bangkok Bank accounts that were opened previously on correct visa types.

I lost my card and had to get it replaced. The bank clerk noticed I had a different passport number as I had a new one. She made copies of passport with visa and everything and sent it to Bangkok head quater.

I was afraid they might close it but nothing happened. Knock on wood

It actually doesn’t matter if you have a dtv or not, I know there was a lot of talk about them banning dtv related accounts but me for one confirmed 2 accounts at kbank and bkkbank during that whole thing. They checked and photocopied my dtv visa and that was it. That was a a year ago. 0 issues

Anonymous participant 207 it's been since a year ago that Bangkok Bank has started closing accounts which is held by a DTV Visa holder. Stay under the radar.

You can avoid this issue by not replacing the ATM card, as you can still withdraw from any Bangkok Bank ATM using the cardless withdrawal feature from the bank's app. You can use the same app to pay everywhere in Thailand via Promptpay.

True this. The only thing you cannot do this way is pay cash into your account (at an ATM / CDM). This (for foreigners) only works with the debit card, not the mobile app alone.

Its a lottery with Bangkok bank no other experiences apply, as your probably aware BB have been closing accounts on DTV, but in your favour you've you had the account 5 years and they did say they were looking closer at accounts under two years, so its not a straight no.

I replaced my debit card but have non o, extension, I tried to see if they checked my visa ext. Unfortunately, the process of registering the new card was problematical and I dont know what they did. Good luck.

You technically don’t need the debit card. You can just do everything with their mobile app and internet banking. One way to avoid having unwanted in person contact.

Strangely enough I just today renewed my ATM debit card with Siam Commercial Bank. I opened my account with them 15 years ago when I had Non Immigrant B visa and work permit.

1 year ago I changed over to DTV as I started working freelance for overseas customers.

SCB did not even question my change of visa type.

All done in 15 mins including doing the biometric picture to use for transfers above 50,000 baht in the Phone App.

It's only BKK Bank that are likely to close your account if you're on DTV (for now)

My Thai wife has an account with Siam Commercial Bank. A few weeks ago she went in and asked for a new debit card as her present one had expired. They sent her away saying they no longer issue them!

I have no idea. I assume it would be easier for Thai citizens to get full banking services in Thailand, but in this case your wife is Thai and they declined to give her a card. Never heard of it before

Maybe it’s branch specific?
