after a month of efforts to open a thai bank account, the latest snag is i’ve been told, despite having my passport stamped in bangkok, multiple entry, 10 year visa, i can’t because the letter notification of qualification endorsement has expired. this is the letter i used to get the visa. it is not relevant anymore. chatgbt says the bank is using an expired list of documents to review and they are wrong. any ideas? .
Answer summary
A user is struggling to open a Thai bank account due to an expired qualification endorsement letter, despite holding a multiple entry, 10-year LTR visa. Comments suggest following the instructions on the LTR website, trying different banks known for expat-friendly services like Kasikorn and SCB, and obtaining a residency certificate from immigration, which may help clarify the eligibility requirements for banking. Forum participants emphasize the variability in bank policies and recommend persistence and exploration of alternative avenues.

So, I went to Bangkok Bank today after BOI liaison set appointment and collaborated with the Phuket Town branch. they reviewed my documents and I filled out a million forms. Then it goes up for final review and approval. They’ll call me back when done. Wanted people to know the newest procedure. Good for them. With influx of some bad actors, money laundering, etc. illegal proceeds from property purchases going into their bank. I think they are getting a handle on it, trying to come to a uniform procedure across all banks. growing pains. Respect.

Call the bank's call center ask what documents you need and follow the instructions. If the bank teller refuses to open an account just ask them for their name so you can report them to the call center. They will swiftly change their mind.

Does you passport have the visa in it? I thought they give you 60 days to get the Visa in Thailand or the selected Embassy? With the stamp, you don’t need the letter. Your passport should show the visa.

When I retired, I seriously considered making Thailand my country of residence, for all the usual reasons. But my gut feeling, based on years of visits and stays in rural and urban Thailand was "something not right here" so I stayed in my farang environment. Turns out my gut was right.

Mark Lai I disagree. If you live in Thailand, you really do need an account for any level of convenience. They are also not hard to get if you are on the right visa type. They are easy to maintain. The apps are generally all good (at least K bank, SCB, UOB, and TTB are excellent apps). And you can just wire the money out of country if you need to.

After my Bangkok Bank branch closed, I sought to open another extra interest account at Krungthai Bank, where I already had an account. Initially refused, I spoke with the manager and presented my passport, visa stamp, Pink ID, and Yellow Tabien Baan. He then requested an Amphur document to confirm my residency at the same address. Once provided, my new account was approved.

That is a tourist visa according to the banks

Probably gonna difficult as tourists cannot open bank accounts any more. In fact with long term tourist visa many have had their accounts closed.

I guess you need to try another bank or at least another branch of the same bank.

My experience a few weeks ago:

1. I came with all required documents to open another account for my foreign wife to Krungsri branch in Bluport Hua Hin. Need to add I have an account since more than 11 years at that bank.

2. Bank accountant explained, the bank´s policy don´t allow to open a bank account with a non-O-A visa as this has a remark of the expiry of the insurance under the stamp in passport. I even did not start to argue, senseless to discuss such BS.

3. One hour later went into another branch of same bank, opened account smooth and without hassle.

What is required:

- passport

- ID card or foreign driving licence

- copy of Visa

- address confirmation from immigration for BANK issues (which requires a TM30 of your landlord / hotel); remark: this document expires after a certain time (guess 30 days)

- confirmation of your telephone number from your phone provider

- some money to deposit it on the account (I guess 1000 THB is enough)

Thailand is awash in a sea of grey, these negative interactions usually boil down to whom you talked to and how they felt about you while you met with them. every branch will give a different response like immigration. try the bank you want but maybe you have to visit 4-5 branches. normally a passport and your retirement visa should be enough. go to kbank. some banks just refuse because they're English is poor and they can't communicate with you or just don't want the hassle.
Nongnuch ********
Nongnuch ********
Eileen Stelladog . . . The minimum requirement for opening a bank account is always a long-term visa, meaning at least a Non-Immigrant O, O/A, LTR, or O/X type visa, or an Elite Privilege Visa.

Some bank employees will claim you need a work permit, but this is simply not true.

You cannot open a bank account on a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry visa (you can, yet only possible at a very high cost through a handful of agents).

To open a Thai bank account all by yourself, you must first be registered at a residence using a TM30 form.

Then you obtain a "certificate of residence" from Immigration, in which Immigration requests the specific bank branch to open an account for you (you must tell Immigration what the COR will be intended for).

You will also need a Thai mobile phone number. The SIM card must be registered in your name and passport number. Show the COR at the phone shop (but don't leave it in the shop) and ask for confirmation of the registration (or likewise a note about it on the receipt).

If bank employees become uncooperative and keep making up new requirements to get rid of you, go to another bank. Avoid Bangkok Bank as they are not very foreigner-friendly any more. I recommend Kasikorn, Khrungthai and SCB.

you must ask Immigration to issue the CoR based on the reason you want to use it for. If you want to use it on the DLT, Immigration must make a note in the CoR that you need it for making a drivers license or for extending your drivers license. A CoR is valid for 4 weeks to use on the DLT. . . If you want to get a bank account opened, Immigration in the CoR must adress the specific bank branch and ask them to open a bank account for you

Eileen Stelladog Thai bank account opening MINIMUM pre-requisites:

*** have a Longterm visa, like a 90-days Non-Imm-O visa type, an LTR or Non-O/A

*** you need to be properly registered per TM30 Online System at your accommodation

*** visit Immigration and ask for the “certificate of residence”. Immigration in this document will ask the bank explicitly to open a bank account for the applicant.

*** have a Thai mobile number and the SIM-card registered to your name and passport number, show the receipt from the phone shop.

*** your passport as a valid document of identification.

Some banks will ask you for a second piece of valid identification, like your home country driver’s license.

*** a work permit (only if applicable – it is NOT a mandatory requirement!)

Here a list of NOT commonly needed requirements, but that can get asked from over-zealous bank staff:

*** They might tell you that you have to be married to a Thai wife if you want to get a bank account opened.

*** a rental contract - actually irrelevant- but it is okay if you got one, or if you got a blue housebook indicating ownership of a condo.

*** a third (!) piece of identification (check above)

*** a mandatory life-insurance or accident insurance the bank offers you for yearly 5000 Baht (they love to earn a sidekick)

*** your foreign Tax-number or Social Security number (which would be okay so far, why not)

Try several branches of different banks, you should find one that opens an account for you under the minimal requirements. Sometimes it takes a day or two of running around until you find a bank willing to help you.

I don’t recommend Bangkok Bank. Better get a Kasikorn or Siam Commercial Bank account. Other good banks are Khrungthai and Krungsri

In case you consistently meet bank staff who resist and pull out of their noses random requirements, use the service of an agent. In Pattaya for example, you can get a Thai bank account opened within 2 days for 5000 THB. In Bangkok, you might ask Thai Visa Centre, the owner of this Facebook Group

Eileen Stelladog the LTR makes you elegible to get a bank account opened. But the minimum requirements for the bank are: You need a "certificate of residence" from your Immigration and a Thai mobile SIM card registered to your passport and name. And on many banks a secondary proof of idendity next to your passport, like a drivers license

The bank knows what they need. Social media is not the place to get real advice. if the bank asks for something then thats whats they need. if you do not agree then try another bank. If they say the same then you know the bank is right. Starting a debate on social media will not make the bank change their policy. I opened a bank account in a couple of banks now and I just took my passport with visa and proof of address. I had my work permit but was never asked for it.

Simon Lomas Baloney. It's common in Thailand for different branches of the same bank to have different rules. Never mind different banks. Even the particular bank employee and their mood varies daily. The bank won't tell you this but social media will.
