There have been reports of immigration officers actually checking the residences you are registered to. I would imagine it all ties in with the new rule of informing immigration every time you move or change residence within 24 hours.

Some consulates are refusing to grant visas without Thai address! This was today in Vientiane.

If you don't have a visa already in your passport they won't let you fly without a return.

The airline saw that I didn't have a return ticket and initially refused me boarding. That was until I pointed out that I already had a visa in my passport secured from the Thai consulate in London.

Well the overstay will cost about the same as an extension and would avoid the inconvenience of going to immigration.
