That is intresting. Last year I a Loas border run from Chiang with a 60 day visa from an embassay. Initially I was told the visa did not exist and only a 30 day would be given. However they were very helpful and issued a 60 day.
That's a new one. Been coming for 30 plus years, never been asked. But one thought comes to mind. Enter dressed like a tramp, many do these days, and I would ask.

Probably if I was to do chores in return for board and lodging then, as in Australia, would be in breach of your visa. Money does not gave to change hands.
My advice would be to book on the airlines site as any changes will be easier. Having said that this year for personal reasons had to book a few days before the flight and it was £1000 on the aitline site . Tried Booking dot com and it was £700. No issues on the first flight.
